S2721QS, XPS 15 9510, WD19S, no 4K@60Hz

Hi,

I'm currently trying to get a Dell S2721QS to display at its native resolution 4K (3840x2160) at 60Hz from a Dell XPS 15 9510 via a Dell Dock WD19S (180W) with a DisplayPort cable.

However, on Windows 10 it does not let me go higher than 30Hz which makes the cursor, video playback and moving windows around look quite slow and juddery. I can drop down from the native 4K resolution and get 60Hz, but then text becomes quite blurry.

If I plug the S2721QS in via the XPS's included USB-C adaptor (via HDMI) it works correctly at 4K@60Hz, but if I use the Dell WD19S via a HDMI or Display Port cable it will only let me go as high as 30Hz.

I've tried changing between all of the USB-C ports on the laptop and switching between HDMI and DisplayPort cables, but no combination seems to work correctly.

I've also tried installing the drivers for both the WD19S and S2721QS and then updating my NVIDIA and Intel UHD drivers as well, but this made no difference. I also tried using the DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in Safe Mode and reinstalling everything but this also didn't help.

Interestingly, I booted up into Manjaro Linux 21.1.2 (GNOME edition) via a USB drive and it detected the WD19S and display correctly and output at 4K@60Hz so it seems like this setup is capable of running 4K@60Hz via the WD19S and DisplayPort.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or know any ways to get Windows to output at 4K@60Hz?

Thanks for any help.

After some more investigation I found a solution, so I'll post it here if anyone else has the same/similar issue:

  1. Download and extract Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
  2. Right click CRU.exe and run as administrator
  3. Select "DELA198 - DELL S2721QS" (or the monitor with the wrong refresh rate) in the profile menu
  4. In "Detailed resolutions" select the first item (e.g. 3840x2160 @ 60.000 Hz...) and click Edit
  5. Change the refresh rate from 60.000 to 59 and press OK
  6. Press OK to save and exit
  7. Right click restart64.exe and run as administrator - the display driver should restart
  8. Go into the Control Panel and find and select the display, then under the Advanced display settings > Refresh rate: "59Hz" should now appear

@HudsonShrubbery  Did you update your BIOS and the firmware on the dock? 4K 30 Hz is what you’d get if the system was negotiating DisplayPort HBR2 rather than HBR3 with the dock. But the fact that it works properly with the adapter you have confirms that the system will run HBR3 as it should be able to do. The test with Linux is especially interesting to me, since I would have expected this to be a firmware interoperability issue of some kind, but that suggests it may be drivers. I remember the XPS 13 9300 when it first launched had issues running dual 4K 60 Hz through the WD19TB even though that should have been possible, so this may be a similar issue. If you’ve already updated all drivers and firmware and haven’t seen success with any of the dock’s outputs, then your only option may be to wait for a future update that will fix this, or else maybe get a WD19TBS, but that would involve paying more for additional functionality you don’t need purely to work around a problem with something that should be working the way you need it to.

I've updated the XPS BIOS and the dock firmware previously. Downloading and running both firmware updates are reporting that they're both up to date.

So it sounds like either a future firmware update could fix this issue, but in the meantime I can use the provided USB-C HDMI adaptor (in Windows) or use Linux if I want to run the monitor at its native resolution and refresh rate.

I've just given this a try, but it's not giving me the option to set 59hz.

I've got a XPS 15 9510 into a WD19S, then using a HDMI 2.0 cable plugging into a S3221QS.

4k @ 30hz and HDR works, but no option for 60hz even after trying your fix. Interestingly enough, if I use the HDMI & USB 2.0 to USB C adapter that came with the laptop, I can get 4k @ 60hz but no HDR. I had also purchased a Dell Adapter - USB-C to HDMI on the recommendation of Dell support, but this could also only achieve 4k @ 60hz without HDR.

Nevermind, got this working!

I purchased a DisplayPort 2.0 cable (probs over kill, but it was cheap) and at first, I was only getting 1080p as the max res. I moved the USB C connection from the WD19S to the one on the right hand side of the XPS15 next to the SD card reader. I tried the CRU fix, but this didn't work, I was still just getting 4K@30hz with HDR. I then moved the cable back to the otherside and for some reason, I was still able to get 4k@30hz again. I tried the CRU fix once and this time it worked!

To recap, this is how I've not got it set up. XPS 15 into the WD19S, using the first USB C port on the left side of the device. The WD19S into the S3221QS via a Display Port 2.0 cable. Apply the CRU fix and I'm able to get 4k @ 59hz and HDR (though only 8bit, still better than nothing!).
