S3221QS, Mac Studio M1, flickers when scrolling

As soon as I connected my screens (I have two of the same), I found that when I scroll up and down on particular sites, I get vertical lines and a flashing happening on the screen that I'm scrolling on. I played around with the refresh rate, which only made it worse (Changed from 60 to 50), and then I thought of trying to change the color profile. When I changed the color profile to Apple RGB, the problem disappeared. I'm hoping this fixes the issue long term. I am mostly posting for anyone else that may face this issue.

So I spent a while with Dell Support and Apple support, and neither of them helped me solve the problem.

I continued to troubleshoot each time the issue came up until one day when I found the internal screen setting called "Dark Stabiliser" This setting instantly stopped the flickering from happening, but the problem with this setting was that it also created weird highlights with my photo, and video editing which is not helpful so I had to turn this off.

I continued with troubleshooting and found that the issue is at its worst when there is a large amount of shadows/darks in a site, image or video on the screen. So I then adjusted my contrast and brightness in the internal screen settings and found I could get that flickering to stop.

I have only found this today, so I can't confirm it's a long-term fix, but right now, I cannot recreate the issue the way I could previously, which gives me hope. At this point, I'm running two 4k 120f USB to HDMI cables; in my Apple display settings, I have the colour profile "DELL S3221QS", and in the Dell internal settings, Dell presets >Standard & YPbPr. My contrast and brightness are set to 85% (I don't love that I don't get to have control over my settings, but I'm glad I can enjoy the screens)

Hope this helps someone

This topic has been raised before in this post:
https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors/S2721QS-dual-Apple-MacBook-Pro-M1-Max-Thunderbolt/m-p/8148998

I have two Dell S2721Q monitors connected to my 16" MacBook Pro with M1 Pro. They are connected to my Caldigit T3+ dock. One is connected via display port, the other via Display port to USB-C.
Ever since I bought the laptop close to a year ago I have had this exact issue plaguing me.
Turning down the refresh rate from 60hz to 30hz resolved the issue for me, however it would still exhibit laggy behaviour and was not ideal.
The issue occurs even without using the dock, and even using one monitor at a time.

After following the advice from the post I linked to above, I purchased two of the Satechi HDMI to USB-C 4K cable, and can confirm that this completely resolved the issue.

This is the cable that resolved my issues - https://satechi.net/products/aluminum-type-c-to-hdmi-cable-4k-60hz?variant=35106597449

(I am in Australia and purchased through Officeworks)

I am now running both monitors at 60Hz with no issues.

The only caveat is that my TS3+ dock only supports a single USB-C input for an external monitor, which means I need two cables connected to my mac now instead of one, however this is a very reasonable compromise given I have been running at 30Hz for the past year.

I hope this helps others!

Dell monitor menu does have Apple RGB? Assuming that you made that change in Apple OS somewhere?

Hey mate, sorry i wasn't clear in which settings I was talking about; try this:

So my apple display settings are:

- Colour profile: Apple RGB
- Refresh rate: 60 Herts

Dell Screen Internal settings are the default

- Colour mode: Standard
- Input Colour Format: YPbPr

Hi! I have the same problem here with two identical exemplars of the S3221QS(A).The issue is unfortunately only reduced by setting the color space to sRGB. What helped permanently for me, was to set the display mode to FPS. This reliably mitigates the issue but is not a real solution due to the muted colors in that mode.

The problem is easily reproducible with animated color transitions (e.g. switching between windows in Ubuntu 22.10 which fades the inactive window title to gray and the active to anthracite). Also scrolling in Slack reliably reproduces the issue (where I first noticed it and where it's most annoying for me).

In my recherche I found most people experience this issue on MacOS which makes a lot of use of fade-in and -out transitions but it happens also with other OS like Ubuntu or Fedora no matter if X11 or Wayland.

Hi Chris, yes, you're correct, and to clear myself up, the Screen's internal setting is set to "Standard", but in the apple displays settings, I have changed the colour profile to "Apple RGB."

So my apple display settings are:

- Colour profile: Apple RGB
- Refresh rate: 60 Herts

Dell Screen Internal settings are the default

- Colour mode: Standard
- Input Colour Format: YPbPr

Hi! In the mean time an update from my side:
I tried a different USB-C to HDMI adapter (this time a Dell one - included with the XPS 15) and the problem disappeared.

Question, are you running both screens through USB-c to HDMI adaptors, or are you using the 1 HDMI port and 1 USB-C Port?

Interesting, ill have to try that, as since posting this, I have noticed that the problem still occurs; it's just less frequent.

I've been trying to solve this issue for ages thinking it was a Slack issue (since this is most apparent with Slack running).

Leaving a comment to say that swapping the colour profile to RGB fixed the issue. This is with a brand new Macbook Pro with an internal HDMI port.
