I also have the same problem. Annoying as I purchased the U2520D because of its Audio as well as the color capabilities. Very annoying! I am using solely USB Type-C connections.

The online U2520D User's Guide shows us that the U2520D Menu does not have any Audio On/Off settings. So the macOS controls its audio out into the U2520D. External powered speakers must be connected to the U2520D Audio Line-out port. Then look in the macOS audio settings for the U2520D to choose it as the default audio output device.
