U2723QE, questions around connectivity/functionality
Hello,
I was interested in purchasing a U2723QE and I currently have a S2721DGF that I was planning on using as a secondary monitor. I had a couple questions on setup and just overall functionality of features.
I have a 2019 16" MBP with 4x Thunderbolt 3 ports. These are the ports on the U2723QE that I'm referencing in my questions.
- Would I just need to connect one USB-C to USB-C cable from the MBP to Port 5 on the U2723QE? This should be sufficient for video, data and charging up to 90W?
- Does data in this context include internet when connecting to the RJ45 port?
- Does data transfer also include attaching a KVM to ports 9 and 10?
- If my laptop needs a 96W charger, does this mean that no charging would occur, or would it be very slow charging?
- If I wanted to connect my MBP to the other monitor, do I just connect from another USB-C port on the MBP to a DisplayPort on the S2721DGF? I have read that DisplayPort MST is not functional on macOS.
- In this setup would a KVM connected to the U2723QE still have the ability to move around windows on the S2721DGF since the KVM is essentially seen as connecting to the MBP?
- If I wanted to attach another laptop to the U2723QE via USB-C would I need to connect to port 8? Or would I need to connect from USB-C on the second laptop to DisplayPort on port 4? Is port 8 only used in this context for data (Ethernet, KVM)?
- How does the KVM auto-switching functionality work? Lets say I had two laptops connected to the U2723QE and was initially using the KVM on the MBP over port 5. Would I just shut down the MBP, start up the other laptop attached to port 4 for DisplayPort and port 8 for data and then I would be able to control the other laptop? Port 8 has to be used in this scenario for data transfer and port 4 wouldn't be able to provide KVM functionality?
- Can port 15 be used to charge a phone from USB-C to USB-C? This says it is a downstream port so is that only for charging purposes?
- If I need to buy additional USB-C cables are there specific ones to buy?

1. Correct.
2. Correct.
3. Correct.
4. The max charge would be 90W. I would not call it slow charging.
5. Correct.
6. No. The U2723QE will not see the second S2721DGF.
7. Port 8 is data only, no video. So yes, port 4.
8. You would not have to shut down the 1st MBP. Just change the Input Source to port 4. Correct.
9. Correct.
10. Stick with Apple branded additional cables.
