U3821DW, how to attach a second P2720DC?

Dell U3821DW

Dell U3821DW

Hi,

As the title says I am trying connect the U3821DW monitor to a P2720DC and can't get this to work and the manual is no help either!

I have connected to the U3821DW via USB-C Upstream port to a Dell laptops Thunderbolt port. I have then tried using the two HDMI ports and the DisplayPort on the U3821DW but I do not get a signal to the P2720DC. Am I doing something wrong? Is it even possible?

Thanks in anticipation.

* Go back to the top of this Monitors Forum
* Open the Pinned posts, "FAQ Monitor"
* Read, "Daisy Chaining explained"

To connect two Dell monitors to each other, the 1st monitor in the DP MST daisy chain must have a DP out port. The second monitor must have a DP in port.

In your case, the P2720DC has to be the 1st monitor. Why? Because the U3821DW does NOT have a DP out port. This is shown in the online U3821DW User's Guide page 11.

The online P2720DC User's Guide pages 30 and 42 show how to DP MST daisy chain FROM the P2720DC to a second monitors DP in port.

Laptop TB/USB-C out port --> USB-C to USB-C cable --> P2720DC #7 USB-C in port (Menu- Display- MST On)

P2720DC #6 DP out port --> DP to DP cable --> U3821DW #5 DP in port

Thank you for your response. It seems a huge oversight to not include a DP out port on the new U3821DW? I bought the U3821DW for the built-in hub. If I daisy chain from the P2720DC to the U3821DW, all of those ports on the U3821DW go to waste. It does not seem that it was even conceived that users may want to attach a second monitor to this U3821DW? Such a shame and a opportunity missed. For the benefit of anyone else that may read this, I got around this by using my old Dell Thunderbolt docking station and running the connection from the USB-B upstream port (on the U3821DW) to the docking station which effectively means that the USB-C upstream is useless for connecting and using both monitors. Any way, not sure if I am making much sense and will leave it at that for now.

@Redant101 hello. I have the U3821DW. the configuration with DP ports can't support the USB of U3821DW. Thank you, I have understood the configurazion with docking station is better. Maybe the best solution could be to have the 2° monitor with USB C for daisy sync.
