Hi Alan,

So this is a physical machine migrated to VMware?

My advice is to run NMM Config Checker on that machine and check out the output, as I'm afraid the OS is still keeping some old VSS/Volume configuration.

What is the output of the following command?:

vssadmin list volumes

Also, have you checked Disk Manager? Are you finding anything incorrect in there?

Also check the Application and System event logs, and you will find some vents related to VSS, volsnap or similar. If so please paste in here the messages.

Have you tried NTbackup? Try and check out the failure (I'm sure it's going to fail), as I think the main issue is that OS is still not synchronized in terms of volume management.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Alan,

I would say you should check the configuration of the VM, however would you mind to render nmm.raw and paste the output in here?

To render it open CMD and go to the following path:

C:\program Files\legato\nsr\applogs> nsr_render_log nmm.raw > nmm.log

What about the Application and System event logs, did you find any error?

Thank you.

Carlos.

Thanks Carlos,

I couldn't find anything in the event logs in regards to volumes...

Here's the log.

Thanks Carlos,

Correct, it appears this was a physical machine converted to VMware.

The checker gave me this in regards to volumes:

VSS_SHADOW_COPY_CAPABLE_VOLUMES

Volume path: C:\

   Volume name: \\?\Volume{ad4bf8f0-0cfd-11dc-90b5-806e6f6e6963}\

Volume path: E:\

See the notes below...

Note 1: Volumes listed above(drive letters) should only be used and specified in Savesets for backup.

Note 2: Don't mix volumes supported by software and hardware providers in the same saveset.

New volumes are not mounted automatically when added to the system.  To mount a

volume, you must create a volume mount point.

vssadmin list volumes listed:

Volume path: C:\
    Volume name: \\?\Volume{ad4bf8f0-0cfd-11dc-90b5-806e6f6e6963}\
Volume path: D:\
    Volume name: \\?\Volume{ad4bf8f1-0cfd-11dc-90b5-806e6f6e6963}\
Volume path: E:\
    Volume name: \\?\Volume{3a0a482b-3540-11de-8d20-806e6f6e6963}\

Disk manager, which alerted me to something fishy in the first place when I first checked it as there was no F:\ or G:\:

Capture.PNG

Although G:\ is visible as a RAMDISK in the unsupported partitions tab in VMware tools properties..

Capture1.PNG

Very bizarre indeed..

Hi Alan,

I didn't get the entire output, anyway, could you, as a test set the following variables in the client, within the Application Information field?:

NSR_IGNORE_MISSING_SYSTEM_FILES=yes

NSR_DEVICE_INTERFACE=DATA_DOMAIN

NSR_DIRECT_ACCESS=Yes/No/Default

- Yes is for DISK_ONLY, which means that the data travels directly to Data Domain appliance.

- No is for STORAGE_NODE, which means data travels to the Data Domain appliance through the NetWorker storage node.

- Default is for undefined, which means that NMM ignores this parameter and NetWorker decides about the media type based on client configuration.

Once backup runs please attach the output of the nmm.raw renderd (full output if possible).

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi AlanJH,

7.6.2.1 is the NetWorker Client version, What about the NetWorker module for Microsoft Applications ( NMM) version and its build number ?

Are you using the NMM or NMSQL modules ?

Is there any error messages related to this issue in the event viewer starting from the backup start time till the time out ?

Thanks,

Ahmed Bahaa

Hi Alan,

Yes, What about the Application and System event logs, Did you find any errors as well related to that G: partition?

Did you tried a reboot to that machine ?

Waiting your updates.

Thanks,

Ahmed Bahaa

Hi Alan,

Sorry for the late reply but I was on vacations.

My first advice would be to upgrade to latest build 087 of NMM 2.3

Second of all, please check the VSS configuration by going to Disk Management, right click in any of the disks, and select properties. Then go to the Shadow Copy tab, and check the configuration for each of the drives. There is a chance that one of the disks is configured to place the shadow copy or snapshot in the H:\ drive, and in that case it should be changed.

@ Ahmed, for your info, in the output of nmm.raw you can find all information about NW client and NMM version installed:

73064 14/03/2012 8:01:42 AM  1 0 0 2112 7068 0 server1 nsrsnap_vss_save Version information for C:\Program Files\Legato\nsr\bin\nsrsnap_vss_save.exe:\n Original file name: nsrsnap_vss_save.exe\n Version: 2.3.0.81\n Comments: NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications (x86)

Thank you.

Thanks Carlos and Ahmed, I hope you enjoyed your vacation.

I've updated Networker and NMM to SP3 and build 87 respectively. However, once I uninstalled and reinstalled, I've gained an extra shadow drive.. I now have F and G which look like C drive replicas.

I've kicked off the backup again and waiting for some results..

Also, I noticed it has been sitting on "Importing snapshot for C:\,D:\,E:\", for quite some time.. and I see no movement in the TMP directory (I've already renamed it)..

Also, I've noticed the amount of volumes in the journal manager has gone through the roof..

Hi Alan,

Can you check the status of the writers?:

vssadmin list writers.

If there is any of them in status [5] waiting for completion then I would say give it some more timer before aborting the backup, so if it finally releases the writer you won't have to reboot that box.

Also, can you check the number of snapshots?:

vssadmin list shadows

If that finally doesn't work I would suggest you to:

1.- Cancel the backup (you won't be able to do it from NMC, you will have to manually kill savegrp on NW server), and manually terminate nsrsnap_vss_save.exe and RM services (irccd and PS).

2.- Stop NW services on the client including RM service.

3.- Stop NW services on the server

4.- Rename /nsr/tmp on the client

5.- Rename /nsr/tmp and /nsr/res/jobsdb on the server

6.- Start services on NW server

7.- Start services on NW client, including RM service.

8.- Manually delete the shadows on the client using diskshadow (explained below).

9.- If possible reboot the client.

10.- Run a new backup and check the results.

To delete snapshots or shadows in Windows 2008 and 2008 R2:

c:\>diskshadow

DISKSHADOW>delete shadows all

DISKSHADOW>exit

Thank you.

Carlos.
