Backup Server ADC

Hi,

The backup server is Windows 2003 ADC. Whenever, we run the backup for SYSTEM FILES:, SYSTEM STATE: & SYSTEM DB:, we get errors -
10/31/06 20:37:15 nsrd: media warning: \\.\Tape0 writing: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error., at file 2 record 4390

The tape gets marked full. You can relabel the tape and continue with other backups but this backup does not happen. I earlier faced this problem but when we stopped backing up SYSTEM DB:, it got resolved.

Any clues.

Do you get that all the time? If you use parallelism 1 (on client) do you get the same problem?

I have seen driver issue recently with symptoms like that.

I have not tested that but how do you think is parallelism going to effect this?

Incidentally both are DELL LTO standalone drives - one was LTO2 & the other was LTO3.

Incidentally too I'm referring to LTO3 drives shipped by Dell :D (with driver date that raises suspicion a bit).

So, do you remember anything about the driver dates etc. The same server when configured as a client to a Windows 2000 gets backed up properly. That server also uses a Dell tape drive. So, may be I will check the drivers form there and test.

Driver properties are showing date 2004 (not a year when LTO3 existed or at least not stable driver), however that is supposed to be driver from 2005 (not sure about exact date now) and apparently that is the latest Dell version. inquire is showing those drives as IBM drives, but apparently (not my customer) with IBM drivers it does not work at all.

inquire detects it as Dell Powervault LTO2 tape drive. Driver date is 04/14/2005.

Keeping parallelism to 1 helped. The backup worked fine. We ar eretesting today but still do not understand the logic.

I'm also not sure what it is - Dell claims that to be latest driver in my case for what customer has and issue seems to be related to it.
