Backward compatibility with NW 7.4 SP2
Came across a strange problem yesterday. Was upgrading from NW 7.0 to NW 7.4 SP2. The backup server is on Win2K3. Thing is we changed the physical hardware of the backup server. The hostname and IP were kept the same. The only change in terms of hardware was the addition of a NIC card connected to a private network.
The clients are on multiple platforms. I upgraded 5 of the clients (3 Windows and 2 Solaris) to NW 7.4 SP2. I had a problem with the backup until I specifically added the backup server's name for both the network interfaces in the servers file. This I found strange as normally a blank servers file is supposed to allow all NW servers to connect to the client.
The next problem came with the lower version client machines. For Linux and Unix clients, running NW 7.0, the backups to the NW 7.4 server were successful. For all windows clients (Win2k, Win2k3 and WinXP), running NW 7.0, the backups gave the error, "Probe failed with severe errors".
Now ... I have always been able to fix the probe errors by fixing the name resolution. In this case, name resolution was fine. The moment I upgraded Win2k and Win2k3 to NW 7.4, the backups started working. I would have thought that backward compatibility was just not there but the next strange thing happened. For some reason, NW 7.4 would not work with WinXP. So on the WinXP machines, I reverted to NW 7.0. Lo and behold, the backups started working again!!! I am at a loss. Why did the backups fail in the first place? Why did they start working once I reinstalled NW 7.0? Would appreciate any and all responses ... Am totally clueless and this thing is driving me crazy cause I am just not able to figure it out.
This is beginning to seem like one of the Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie mysteries that I love to read.

You should start client initiated backup when you get this sort of failure (or simply test probe) and take it from there. WinXP needs at least certain patch level to be able to work correctly with 7.4.x (otherwise you'll see BSOD).

WinXP needs to be SP3 to work with 7.4. The servers I am working with are SP2 so I have upgraded to 7.3.2 instead. In any case the backups are working at the moment after upgrading or reinstalling 7.0 in a couple of cases. I am just curious as to why it works after reinstalling and not before. Even more strange is that I have had sites where even NW 5.x clients work fine with NW 7.4 server.
