i am new to emc backup technology. I would like to know the difference between avamar and data domain

Hello,

Both of them are dedupe technologies, but the biggest difference is that avamar dedupes at the client level. Data domain dedupes at the networker server/storage node level (starting with 7.6.2). Earlier networker versions dedupe at the data domain level.

avamar can also be used as a standalone dedup backup appliance, while also having the option to integrate it within EMC Networker.

datadomain is a jack-of-all-trades acting as VTL, CIFS/NFS share and intergrating with newest NW versions with DDboost.

Datadomain by origin is target dedup, but together with symantec netbackup development shifted to client side dedup. After EMC bought datadomain a similar approach was taken with EMC Networker. First it was only at storage node level, later also at client level by using DDboost. With NW 7.6.2 and NetWorker applications modules NMM 2.3 and NMDA 1.2 together with DD OS5.0 the new feature DFA (direct file access) is introduced. This enables the supported NetWorker application clients to deduplicate their backup data locally and read or write the data directly to a NetWorker Data Domain device, thereby bypassing the NetWorker storage node and reducing network bandwidth usage.

If you'd like to differentiate at all: Avamar is especially good in cases of many, smaller files, while datadomain is better suited for large databases (larger than 4TB).

My guess is that in the future avamar/datadomain might urn into one product instead of keeping two similar product lines. The same goes for the Avamar backup software and Networker.

a little more..

EMC Avamar is deduplication backup software and system, which provides fast, efficient backup and recovery through a complete software and hardware solution. Equipped with client-side deduplication technology, Avamar facilitates fast, daily full backups for VMware environments, remote offices, enterprise applications, LAN/NAS servers, and desktops/laptops. Data deduplication significantly reduces backup windows by only storing unique daily changes, while always maintaining daily full backups for immediate single-step restore.

The Avamar Data Store features redundant power and networking, RAID, and patented RAIN (Redundant Array of Independent Nodes) technology to provide uninterrupted data accessibility. Daily data systems checks ensure recoverability whenever needed.  A Data Domain system can also be used as a substitute/in addition to the Avamar Data Store.

Every Avamar backup is a full backup, which makes it easy for you to browse, point, and click for a single-step recovery.

EMC Data Domain is a deduplication storage system for next-generation backup and recovery. Scalable Data Domain systems feature high-speed, inline deduplication and network-efficient replication. A single system can reduce storage requirements 10-30x.

Data Domain is tightly integrated with Avamar and NetWorker. It is also qualified with all leading enterprise backup and archiving applications.

Both solutions are BANDWIDTH OPTIMIZED – sending only unique changed data on a daily basis, thus reducing network traffic. Leverage existing LAN and WAN bandwidth for enterprise-wide and remote/branch office backup and recovery.
