EBS 7.3 and cluster license use questions
Hi
customer has the following active licenses on his 7.3 server.
He has questions about his cluster licenses (cluster is Sun cluster)
All "Connected UNIX clusters" but one are decommissioned but they will soon have the need for backups of 10 cluster nodes.
i.) Will they have to purchase more cluster clients licenses here?
They have 8 clu_unix types, so I'd have thought they'd need 3 more to make 10.
ii.) Is it correct that cluster resources, e.g. "aabsprddb" consume a license?
iii.) 7.3 is eol now as well, so will they even be able to get hold of licenses if they need them?
thanks and regards
geoff

Hi,
With an extended support contract, they can have licensing until March 31st 2011. Is there a good reason why
they don't want to upgrade? From the nsrlic output, it looks like you have one Cluster Client Connection license
available (out of 8). If you need more than that, then you'll have to buy them. The aabsprddb is not in the list of hosts
taking a unix cluster license.
Not sure if this answers your question, let us know if you need something else.

I believe that cluster license are needed for every physical node of that cluster. A 2 physical node cluster will need 2 cluster licenses. The virtual node does not need a license.
However, Although EBS and EMC NetWorker should be the same product, please remember that SUN's version has differences. This is why EBS is supported through SUN and not through EMC support. If there is a code problem, SUN will contact and work with EMC engineering.
Another point to make here is that if you upgrade your systems to 7.4.x or higher, then the issue of cluster licenses is academic. This is because in 7.4.2, they did away with cluster license, and use only client connection licenses.
Note: This is only if the server and the cluster members are 7.4.2 or higher. If the clients have 7.3, then they will still use the cluster license. See the 7.4.x release notes.
HTH.
