How to back up NAS drives
Greetings,
We're looking into purchasing NAS (Network Attached Storage) for a couple of our Windows XP servers. From what I'm told this storage will appear as network drives that have been mapped to the server. As a test I had our Windows person map a drive on a Windows that were backing up with NetWorker, 'Save set' set to 'All', and that drive wasn't backed up. I'm assuming NetWorker skips over networked drives.
What would be the best way to back up a NAS drive. The product we're considering has Windows XP Embedded as the OS. Could the client be installed on it?
Client: Windows XP
Server: RedHat Linux ES3
Networker: 7.2.2

NAS box could be backed up using NDMP but I was just wondering why a NAS box with Windows XP. Even if you need Windows, why not Windows 2000 Storage Server which is most commonly shipped with NAS box.

Thanks for the info. I'm primarily UNIX/Linux so I don't know why the Windows people went with that. I'll have to ask them.
Two questions.
1) I assume then NetWorker will not allow you to back up a mapped drive on a Windows client.
2) What's NDMP?

I think you can use the -L option while using the save command for client-initiated backups. I am not sure about the server initiated backups.
NDMP is Network Data Management Protocol especially designed for NAS boxes where the OS does not have a client for it. I am not sure if it would be a good choice to use it for Windows XP NAS box but then even Windows XP should not be the NAS OS at the first place.
