Index Backups do not complete

Hi Guys,

I've got this problem where my index backup does not complete and it just hangs.
this does not happen all the time, but at least 3-4 times for the week.
The backup completes successful but the index will hang until i stop it.
this does not occur when i do manual backups, only schedule backups are giving me this problem.

Please help!!

Regards
Umraan

When running manual backups (client initiated) index does not get saved to disk/tape.

Usually this sort of problem can be caused by client parallelism of server client resource which should be increased or something else. Without looking at logs and resource database there would be allot of guessing here - you may wish to open a support case to check it out.

sorry, i meant that when i start a group maually it completes the index backup.
but when the group starts automatically the index will hang....and no, there are no wait events.. and no tapes are mounted but the group will indicate that its currently running.....

Without logs and nsrdb it would be difficult to say. As Hrvoje mentioned, your best bet would be to contact support.

Just to check... no wait events?

With manual backups index does not get backed up. Index backup will happen only at the end of a backup group.

My version would be 7.4.3 for legato and the windows server would be x86 5.2

Out of curiosity, what is your backup server version?

Eventually you could try 7.4SP4 on server to see if that makes any difference.

--------

1. try stopping NetWorker
2. remove/rename the \nsr\tmp folder. ( it will be re-created when you restart NetWorker)
3. restart NetWorker

then try the backups.

Also, is this problem something new ? or it has been there for long?

Removing all files inside /nsr/tmp should do. You don't need to remove the directory itself. This might help. No guarantees though.

Thanks guys, removing all the files in the temp directory does solve the problem for a period of time then it just re-surfaces again....i will do with this resolution until I upgrade to 7.5....

I've had this problem for 5 weeks - ever since the upgrade to 7.4.4. Along with jobs hanging, and the server having to be rebooted at least once a day.

And yes, I've delete tmp files, I've increased by jobd, and reduced the number of days retained. I've also deleted my jobd directory, and recreated it. I've done jobs where we used the -D9 option. 5 weeks later, we are still at square one / ground zero.

EMC/Networker support has been pitiful, to say the least. I've had the same ticket open, and all I keep doing is sending them logs, and trace reprots, webex sessions, etc. I gave them notice today, that if they don't assist in fixing this, I'm going on the rampage, and will be calling them non-stop until they get tired of hearing from me.

7.4.4 is a joke - don't go to it unless you absolutely have to. I'm sorry we ever upgraded. 7.2.2 was wonderful.

What is your OS noladave? I do not have experience like you with 7.4.4 running on different OS platforms... in such case this could indicate issue related to your specific environment as well...

Of course, by saying disaster I'm referring to disaster of backup server - not client. In case that your client goes into smoke you can use online index which is up to date.

Further, the issue with index should be fixed by 7.4.4.2 - did you test that?

Hey noladave,
Did EMC ever fix your prblem yet?
Im just asking out of curiosity, because i also got a SR open with them with regards to this.
Let me know if you had any luck by resolving yours

Thanks
