media warning: \\.\Tape0 moving: tape_bsf bsf failed: unknown error 1117

Hi,

I have an old server running Windows 2000 with Legato 5.7. I have taken a virgin tape and tried to make a backup. After more or less 4 Gb, I get the message :

media warning: \\.\Tape0 moving: tape_bsf bsf failed: unknown error 1117(0x45d) (268436573)

And my backup hangs. I have the impression that this points out a hardware failure of my Tapedrive (DLT IV) ?

Did anybody of you had this message ? And how did you solve it ?

Rgds, Johan

This message translates to: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

So there was an I/O error. Source of that message (or I/O error if you want) can be few things - perhaps even NetWorker given that use use very verz old and buggy version. Check you HW and system logs for further info and for your own sake upgrade your NW environment.

I don't think there was a version 5.7 but I may be wrong on that. The error points to some kind of hardware issue. When you see "unknown error" on a Windows box it actually means it is a Windows error and you can look it up with:

net helpmsg 1117

(or whatever the error code is!). Here we see it is an I/O error. If the tape drive has sat idle for a few years it may be that you need to give it a clean (would assume you have not used this environment for a few years!)

I'd suggest updating to a supported version and then see what happens!

5.7 was version released to support win2k if I remember correctly. It was Windows only release. It was also buggy as any other initial release... you could call it early 6.0. Legato played same card once more after when it introduced (again only for Windows folks) 6.2 (where key advantage was NDMP support and new resource structure - kind of early 7.0).

I would check the hardware over carefully before writing it off! Often these sorts of errors are attributable to things like damaged or poorly seated cables, terminators, SCSI cards etc. Try reseating these components and if that is unsuccessful, if possible replace components to see if things improve.

Hi,

I also find in the log of Legato :

media warning : \\.Tape0 reading : unknown error 21 (0x15)(268435477)

Does this make things clearer for you ?

Hi,

My actual Legato is Legato 7.1.3 on Windows 2003 using LTO tapes.
But I have to convert old DLT IV tapes made a few years ago on a Windows 2000 server running Legato 5.7.

My actual server does not have a DLT device connected. And yes, I have done already a lot of cleaning of the DLT tapedrive but that did not really solve my problem. I can make a tiny backup (if i am lucky) of e.g. 1Gb but no much more.

I am thinking about connecting (first ordering it) an external DLT top my old server. Or do you have better ideas ?

Not much clearer except it is indicating a device issue. Check the hardware and see if that resolves any issues...

Try to get alternative DLT tape drive and see how it works - this seems to indicate an issue with drive itself.

All LXB models can give you an option to mount the tape. But, why do you wish to scan the tape which is already inside the database (you said that you just have taken that backup and wish to run scanner on the same box)?

If your mount with nsrjb doesn't work then you have different problem. I would suggest zou use -v for more verbose output. To avoid using nsrjb and mount the tape you can use sjimm. Please note that when scanner runs NW is not aware of that so I would suggest to disable the drive prior to mounting the tape using tool outside NW (or after is mounted with nsrjb).

Hi,

I have moved the Adaptec controller from my old Legatoserver to another identical server (Siemens primergy). I have launched a backup of 32 Gb during the weekend without any problem on that identical one. Now I want to scan my tapes with scanner -i \\.\Tape0 on that server. But when i do that, i first have to mount the tape of slot X in the drive : I use the command

nsrjb -S 1 -f \\.\Tape0. The only I get is : Jukebox LXB:

Is there another way of moiunting the tape in the drive of the Overland ? The LCD console of the Jukebox does not seem to offer that.
