Two of Three tape Drives Giving Read Open Error while Unmounting

Hi All,

We are using AIX machine as NetWorker server running NetWorker 7.5.2. One Quantum Scalar i500 Tape library is attached with FC switch and zoned with backup server.

The library has three LTO-4 tape drives out of them one is running perfectly fine. But the other two generates error "Read Open Error" while unloading the tapes and Tapes does not get unloaded. After trying for 20 to 25 times the tape gets unloaded.

All other operations like writing, mounting, reading is woring fine for all the drives.

Please suggest as I am totally clue less on this.

Regards,

Hi Bobby,

In addition to Read Open Error, sometimes we are getting error "Unload Command not connected". "There is no tape in the drive.

However when I try to unmount from the library console, it gets unmount properly. The problem is occuring only with NetWorker.

I do not know how to check at OS level to unmount tape to some slot, so I have not tried that.

I have changed Unload sleep from 5 to 30 but still we are getting the same errors.

Is there something else after the 'Read open error' statement?  Could you paste in a couple of lines around this please?  When there is a problem with one drive but not another in the library,  we usually suspect hardware problems but it could also be that there is something else trying to access this drive at the same time.  You could try increasing the 'unload sleep' jukebox property also to see if that helps any.

Hi,

To test from the OS, you can use sjimm:

You can get the B.T.L information of the library from the 'inquire' output.
then,

sjimm scsidev@B.T.L. slot 1 drive 1 - to move a tape from the first slot to the first drive
sjimm scsidev@B.T.L. drive 1  slot 1  - to move a tape back to the slot
