    Your question got me curious too, so i did a quick test and as it turns out. In case the "Media Type Required" is not set to "Data Domain" the pool will not even be available to be selected in the destination pool list of the backup action subtype Vmware(vProxy).

  So the answer to your question is ony Data Domain devices are supported for VMware Image Level restores.
