VTL Configuration on Networker

How is a VTL suppossed to be visible to NW? NW 7.4.2 on Solaris.

Is it same as any other library, check through inquire and configure using jbconfig?

Yes, it is the same.

In one of my installations, inquire shows nothing no drives or medium changer. EMC Hardware team is trying to convince me that it would not show anything. You can configure drives and one of them acts as medium changer since there is no physical medium changer in a VTL.

I do not agree with HW team.

I am running version 7.2.2 with Data Domain VTL's. They will only work via fiber connections. Make sure the zones are correct as this caused me some strife for a bit. Once all was in place they setup just like a physical tape library.

It depends on the version of Solaris. As I remember on Solaris 9 there is lus driver which should be configured to allow inquire show what you want to see. On Solaris 10 there is no longer lus driver needed and I am not sure how it should be done on S10.
Anyway I have Solaris 9s and Solaris 10s installations with VTL. Generally inquire command shows me part of devices (or none of them) on those systems, but it doesn't make those systems unusable for NW. It is enough that Operating System CAN see devices (tapes, medium changer) and I am able to configure them on NW. Of course it makes the configuration job a little bit longer and harder (you have to use more than one command to find out what is the path of the particular device with the particular SN) but it is doable.

MY interesting observation is that it is twice now that I configured an FC library on Solaris 9, NW 7.4.x and inquire does not show the device paths. After making some modifications to lus.conf, inquire shows drives but without device paths. Then I had to rely on ls- al output of /dev/rmt/*cbn and work out the sequence.
