What is Dedicated storage node in Networker

Hi,

I found the below defination but I am unable to understand.

Dedicated storage node - This attribute identifies a dedicated storage node. A dedicated storage node can only backup its local data.

Kindly eloborate this topic.

Hi,

This means that this storage node (NW client with devices attached becomes storage node) is only able to send it's own data to the attached devices, and is not able to send data from any other client to any other device either.

In other words, a dedicated storage node is like a normal client for the other clients, as this one will never manage data from any other client that is not itself.

This is a basic explanation, hope that helps.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Moin,

A Storage Node's function in NetWorker is to facilitate putting data onto a device (disk or tape).

A Dedicated Storage Node can only send its data from its local storage to any devices it has attached, it cannot receive data from any other client within the NetWorker datazone over the network.

hope this helps.

Hi,

when does the use of dedicated storage comes into picture? In which scenario

Moin,

It's mainly down to a combination of 3 reasons - cost of the license, size of the data and processing power of the actual server.

1. Dedicated Storage Nodes (DSN's) licenses are cheaper than full storage nodes.

2. Usually in environments they are application servers (for some type of database, Exchange) where the Customer has relatively large amounts of data directly attached to the server and wants to avoid sending it across the network to a Storage Node.

3. The Application server is usually a relatively busy server so its processing power is required to service the application function and not to be used for facilitating receiving data over the network and passing via internal buses to a device. Using some processing power for backup is acceptable as the backup is usually scheduled at a relatively quiet time for the application i.e. not during heavy batch processing or when database is in high demand.

Hi,

we are backing up our Veam Backup Solution for ESX Servers with that scenario, because the Servers have to be backuped by theirselves and they should be fast ("local, virtual" Tapes attached)  no other action is needed.

It works very good and easy. If one of the Servers goes down no other Backups are having an bad impact.

Bye Jens
