BTW, I just thought of one more thing.  Please make sure you are using IE 6.0.  There are known problems with earlier version of IE 5.0 which does not work with Dell Web management interface.  Also can you tell me which version of windows you are running (include patch level too if you know it).

I have just tested this scenario on my switch, and it works just fine.  I'm not sure why you are having problems.  Let me repeat the steps I tested to make sure we are doing the same procedures:

  • I enable management on my 2724 switch (putting it into managed mode - you must have been using the same mode otherwise you could not have accessed the web interface so we are good here).
  • I setup my laptop to an IP address in the same network as the default IP address on the switch.  That is, I setup my laptop to 192.168.2.10/255.255.255.0 (the switch default management address is 192.168.2.1 as you already stated).
  • Then I plug my laptop directly into the switch and use IE to connect to the switch on 192.168.2.1.
  • I login to the switch and created a new user account (I assumed you did this step first before changing IP address otherwise you would have lost connection once IP address is changed and could not have created a new user account without getting back into the switch).
  • Then after I created the user account, I went to the IP address screen and change the IP address of the switch to 10.10.10.1/255.255.255.0.  This cause a dialog box to pop up to indicate that I will lose connection to the switch.  I click on ok to continue.
  • Now I need to change my laptop IP address to the same network so I change its IP address to 10.10.10.10/255.255.255.0.  Then I ping the switch on 10.10.10.1 just to make sure its ok.
  • Then I use IE to connect to 10.10.10.1 and login with my new username/password.
  • I did the same thing using Firefox just to make sure it's ok.

These steps work just fine for me.  Is it possible that maybe your web browser is caching password or something like that?  You might want to try clearing your cache just in case.

Impossible. The password is the same. The web browser caches the user name
and password.

I used another account that never connected to the switch so caching is
impossible.

A question: The Subnet mask of our network is /25 (255.255.255.128) and not /24
(255.255.255.0), did anybody ever try this?

The answer to your second question:
Primary we are using Firefox 1.0.4 on Linux,
Secondary we are using IE 6.0SP1 on Win2003SP1

I just tried the netmask of 255.255.255.128 and it works for me.  Using the steps similar to what I described before except changing the IP address and mask to be what you suggested here (i.e. using /25 instead of /24) and it still works for me.

Solved. For the first tests I didn't enter hostname and reverse IP Address into
the DNS. After doing that, it was no problem to log in.

I don't understand it, but it's working now..

I'm having a strangely smilar problem, but I have not changed any settings on my PowerConnect 2724.  I originally (two weeks ago?) set the switch up as unmanaged, but recently decided to switch to managed mode.  I can not logon to the web interface.  I only get the "User name or password is missing" error.  I'm using "admin" for the username and leaving the password blank.

My browser is IE 6.  My OS is Windows XP SP2.  The browser and OS are fully patched.  I also tried IE 6 on a Windows Server 2003 machine and Firefox 1.04 on my XP machine.  Each had the same results.

Is it possible that there may be a username/password on the switch?  Anyway, if you are sure you haven't configured anything then if you wanted to make sure you could try resetting it to system default just to be sure that there is no username/password configured then try again.  I know of no reason on the switch itself for the problem.

Here is the procedure to reset the switch to default:

Switch Default Button

The PowerConnect 2708/2716/2724 switches have a single Default push-button on the front panel for a manual reset. When activated, the Default push-button restores the configuration values to the device's factory default settings.

On pressing the switch Default button:

  • Factory default configuration (192.168.2.1) is set as the switch IP address.

  • Subnet mask changes to 255.255.255.0

  • Graphical User Interface (GUI) login user name changes to Admin, and the password is not configured (appears blank), with Read/Write privilege.

  • The DHCP client is set off.

  • The device is rebooted.

Has this been resolved.  If I plug in my laptop directly to the switch (2708) I can login with admin and no password.  However, trying over the network from my workstation I get: username and password missing.  Both desktop and laptop are using IE 6

Any ideas?

I have no problem logging in to the switch across a network.  If you get the login screen but fail to login with an error message then it maybe several possible problems.  Try the following:

  • Clear the web browser cache.
  • Do an "arp -d" to delete the arp cache on your workstation.
  • Do a ping to the switch management IP address to make sure you can reach the IP address properly.
  • Try a "tracert" to see if your route to the switch is correct - just in case you are reaching some other location by accident.
  • If you have more then one of these switches on your network make sure you don't have duplicate IP addresses for them.  For example if you have not reconfigured the management IP address then it maybe that you have several 27xx enabled for management on your network and all of them are using 192.168.2.1 IP address which will cause all kind of problems.

I have several of these switches connected to a network through several hops from my workstation and I can connect to them fine.

-Web Browser Cache cleared
-Arp -d done
-Ping succesfull
-Tracert - no hops - my machine to the switch. As expected
-This is my only managed switch on the network
-Still get the username or password missing error.

Remember, from my laptop, I can access that switch no prob.

I just installed firefox and I can access the switch just fine.  So that will work for now.  Strange that I can't get it to work through internet explorer on this machine.  Any ideas on a fix?

What version of IE are you using?  I know there have been report of older version of IE (prior to 6.0) having this problem.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I just reset my switch back to default and when I attempt to connect I get the same problem. I have tried using Mozilla version 1.5 and I have also tried using IE 6.0 sp2. I have cleared the cache have also cleared the ARP table. I have tried everything I can think of. But I still get username and password is missing.

Yep, still a problem for me too.  The only option I have is to use Firefox.  This works, but IE never does.

Sorry I cannot be of further help to you.

So you can get it to work with Firefox? It won't work at all for me. I am wondering if I should hit the button and then pull the power and see if that does anything. I don't see that helping though.

Are you sure you get the "User name or Password is missing" message.  This indicates the browser problem we talk of in this thread.  Any other error message would seem to indicate a different problem.

I haven't playes with this for some time, but I did retest it and still I have problems with IE, but it works with firefox.
