3448P not power IP Phone

I have a new 3448P switch on my network for our new Shortel VOIP system. After finally setting up a separate vlan for the VOIP and getting the routing set. I plug in one of the phone ,which is a Shortel IP 560, and there was no power. I logged into the web interface and click under System->Power-over-Ethernet and the message stated, "There are no POE capable devices on the system", something like that.  Any suggestions guys?

Thanks for that info. I will need to find out if that is the cabling the voip guy in using. I thought it was just plug in and go.

The 34xxP uses the spare pair for power. If the phone is 802.3af compliant, it should work.  Does your cable have all pairs?  Are you sure the phone works?

I work for a Shoretel Partner and we use the dell 3448p and 3424p all the time with our customers.

They work wonderfully with the Shoretel phones (which are 802.3af compliant).

A few suggestions:

 - Verify you are connecting the cable from the switch to the proper port on the back of the telephone.  If you are looking at the back of the telephone, it is the one on the left side.

 - Verify you are using a straight through ethernet cable.  The one that came in the phone box should work.

 - Reseat the cable on both ends - could still be a faulty cable or jack on either side.

 - try another phone - could be a dud phone that can be RMA'd by the manufacturer.

 - Though the default dell powerconnect config has auto detect for power, you could try to log into the switch and type:

conf
int eth eX (where X is your interface number)
power inline never

wait wait wait

power inline auto

to "bounce" the switch interface.

EDIT: Also - try taking the phone to the switch / server room and connecting straight to the switch - if it works there, but not on a desk - it is the station cabling in between.  As the previous post noted, this should be CAT5 (or above) cabling with all pairs terminated.

Good luck!

HA!! Defective switch. Dell sent out another switch in 30 minutes. Awesome. Everything is working now.

Glad you found the problem. Keep in mind that a company called PanOptic Technology makes quite a few elegant solutions for providing power to both PoE and non-PoE devices over Cat-5 cabling:
