Connecting 6224F

Question

Morning all

I have recently expanded my fibre connections by adding a 2nd 6224F switch and stacked them; this is all working fine.

I now want to expand the bandwidth to the desktop and have purchased 2 Netgear GS748TS 48port 10/100/1000 switches and am having real trouble in getting to 6224 to talk to it.

I am using 2 new Dell SX transceivers in both the Dell and Netgear Switches. I have connected them across the fibre and they seem to be seeing each other; the lights go green and in the GUI on both switches the links are saying they are up, but the problem is that no traffic is flowing down the link. I have tried connecting my laptop to the netgear and pinging the DC but get timeouts.

Has anyone connected these before? I believe that the issue in the in Dell as 2 netgears connected work fine.

I hope someone can help me.

I found this web forum on the same subject. He turned off spanning tree on the Dell switch and fixed the issue.

Hello Wayne,

What you can try if you haven’t is to put the PC 6224F into interoperable mode to see if that will allow the Netgear switches will be able to commutate. Here is a link to the user guide and on page 20 it explains about interoperability mode and on page 279, 281 explains how to put the switch into interoperability mode.

Hi Sam L I have checked the 6224 and it is already in interoperability mode.  I cannot check the Netgear as I cannot connect to it from home, but I will check in the morning and let you know. Wayne

I know this almost a couple months old, but I was having the same issue with the exact same switches and was wondering if anyone out there found a solution, I've just had the 6224f daisy chained to another dell switch then from there to the Netgear GS748TP but ideally would like to have it directly connected, we use the Netgear as our main uplink and server switch. The 6224f is used to connect up all of our campus buildings.

Hey thanks that worked for us, kind of stinks if you need STP enabled on this switch fortunately for us it wasn't necessary.

You would only want spanning tree to allow multiple links without LAG to keep broadcasts from radiating out of the loops. We use this to allow a backup copper hard link on our network to certain closets that also have fiber.
