DELL N3024F - ARP[ipMapForwarding]
Hi ,
I am having issues with ARP broadcast from our network devices which has Failover virtual IP configured for 2 x physical NIC connection.
Our setup is 2 x DELL N3024F switch connect to 02 x DELL 6224F switch. Default VLAN 1.
a. DELL N3024F switch is not stacked, it has VRRP configured for L3 routing
b. DELL 6224F switch is stacked with port -channel Link Aggregation
c. Port Gi1/0/2 on DELL N3024F SW-01 connect (RJ45) to 1/g1 on DELL 6224F SW-01
d. Port Gi1/0/2 on DELL N3024F SW-02 connect (RJ45) to 2/g1 on DELL 6224F SW-02
Logging message received sample:
Nov xx 10:20:36 172.168.XX.XX-1 ARP[ipMapForwarding]: ipmap_arp_api.c(1149) 391233 %% Received ARP Reply on interface Vl1 with bad target IP address 255.255.255.255. Sender IP is 172.168.XX.XXX, sender MAC is 00:25:97:XX:XX:XX.
These messages flooded and caused DELL N3024F switch to disconnect interface Gi1/0/2 port from DELL 6224F switch. Everytime this happens to either DELL N3024F switch, I have to power reboot the affected switche to get the connection up again.
Am i missing some configuration not properly done for DELL N3224F switch?
DELL 6224F switch is not showing any errors for the same ARP broadcast, and most of the devices is connected to through it.
Thanks for your kind advice and support.

That’s right, it should stop it from sending ARP packets to a backup router. You do not need to enable portfast, portfast puts the ports into forwarding mode right away, rather than the normal learning process. Typically this is only enabled on edge devices that connect directly to client devices.

Hi,
It is probably because the port channel is going to each of the VRRP switches, so some traffic is getting sent to the backup VRRP router. If you don’t have the port channel and just had individual links going to each switch it probably would not give the errors.

Hi Josh,
Thanks for your advice.
I just need to disable the port channel link aggregation on DELL 6224F switch for the 2 ports connected to both of the DELL N3024F switch. Is this right?
Do I need to enable auto portfast on both DELL 6224F & N3024F switches?
Thanks for your kind support.

Hi Josh,
Thanks for your valuable advice and time.
I tried to configured the 2 ports on DELL 6224F which is connected to DELL N3024F switches.
But, I found that both ports is not member of any port-channel, although under #show interfaces configuration, the Link Aggregate is shown as Admin state - Up.

Sorry for my limited knowledge of the proper CLI and configuration for L3 managed switches;
How do I proceed to configure the 2 specific ports for connection to 2 x N3024F switch (VRRP routing enabled)?
I need to resolve this problem as its giving me nightmares whenever the 2 port is disabled.
The DELL 6224F switch was not configured by me as it was done by a previous vendor.
The 2 x new DELL N3024F switches is added to support new windows 2012 servers and network data concentrators.

Can you post the VRRP config from the N3024s? Is it always the same port that gets disabled? The ARP request is getting sent to 255.255.255.255 which is what happens when it doesn’t know where to send the packet. Is the default gateway on the 6224s set to the IP of the VRRP IP?

Hi Josh,
I just confirmed that all my devices is configured with gateway: 172.168.1.254.
All my new server has 2 NIC configured for teaming, switch independent / dynamic mode.
All my new data concentrators has 2 physical Ethernet port for team bonding.
The ARP messages is from all my data concentrators virtual IP (Hot / Warm IP).
I have configured gateway as 172.168.1.254 for both the physical & virtual interface.
1 additional question:
The VRRP IP: 172.168.1.254 & 172.168.4.254 does not respond to PING request, is this normal?
Both the vlan interface IP do respond to PING request from network devices.

George

Hi Josh,
The ARP error message is still in progress even after I confirm that all device gateway is configured to 172.168.1.254, same as our VRRP IP address.
What could be the issues if ARP is still broadcasting to 255.255.255.255?
Could this be an device problem? Does my configuration for DELL N3024F or 6224F need to modified to resolve the issues?
Thanks for your kind advice and understanding.

George

Have you tried disconnecting the cable or shutting down the port to the second switch to see if the errors stop?

Hi Josh,
I did not tried to remove the cable for the 2nd switch.
I do have another DELL N3024F switch in another rack that has a pair of the data concentrator connected direct to it. This switch is stack with a DELL N3024 switch via a pair of stacking cables.
There's no VRRP configuration, it is configured for separate VLAN 4 on subnet 172.168.4.xxx / 255.255.255.0
Data concentrator HOT IP (Virtual): 172.168.4.4, Warm IP (Virtual): 172.168.4.5.
Data concentrator physical port-1 IP - 172.168.4.2
Data concentrator physical port-2 IP - 172.168.4.3
I found the same log messages from the console:

Well if it is doing it even without VRRP something else is causing the ARP requests to broadcast. This might have some things to try en.community.dell.com/.../19629574

Hi Josh,
The suggested link do not applied to our situation, our data concentrator devices does not require PoE.
Therefore we have not enabled any PoE option within N3024F, is it enabled by default? I could not find any options that enable PoE from the console config.
Looking at the logs, I found the following within Trap log:

Could it be the amount of BPDUs recived in DELL N3024F (Gi1/0/2) from DELL 6224F (1/g1) that caused this issue?

That seems like a high number. You could try enabling bpdu guard or changing the spanning tree settings.

Hi Josh,
After looking through the switch logs which show a lot of STP topology changes for port Gi1/0/2 on N3024F;
1 Dec 1 03:30:28 2016 Spanning Tree Topology Change Received: MSTID: 0 Gi1/0/2
I think the DELL N3024F switch is disabling the Gi1/0/2 because of STP topology, do this indicate looping in our network?
It seem that none of the 4 switches is the Root switch as both Bridge ID & Root ID do not match.
Please note that both the DELL 6224F switch is stacked:
Management Standby Preconfig Plugged-in Switch Code
SW Status Status Model ID Model ID Status Version
--- ---------- --------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -----------
1 Stack Mbr Oper Stby PCT6224F PCT6224F OK 3.3.1.10
2 Mgmt Sw PCT6224F PCT6224F OK 3.3.1.10
a. Port Gi1/0/2 (N3024F -SW01) connected to port 1/g1 (6224F-Stacked)
b. Port Gi1/0/2 (N3024F -SW2) connected to port 2/g1 (6224F-Stacked)
Q1: Do I need to configured N3024-SW1 (VRRP primary) as primary Root switch by changing the Designated Bridge Priority values to 4096? And follow by N3024F-SW2 (VRRP secondary)as secondary Root switch - change Designated Bridge Priority values to 8192?
Q2: Is 'CST Regional Root: 80:00:F8:B1:56:94:D6:54' the current Root switch's MAC address?
Here is the Show Spanning-Tree results from the switches:
