N3024 SFP Disconnecting
We are currently dealing with an issue between two Dell N3000 series. We have a mix of N3024 and N3048 units in our office.
The issue:
We have two buildings connected via 10GbE SFP.
In building A the ram log is constantly reporting the connection failing.
In building B the ram log never reports a connection loss (I would have thought it should?).
Initially the connection was often coming back up after about 5 mins on its own but is now staying down until 1 or sometimes both units are power cycled.
I am wondering if this is normal or if perhaps we are having a hardware issue?

Hi,
What version are the switches firmware at? How long is the distance between the switches? What type of transceivers are you using?

Hi Josh,
Thanks for responding. I realize such questions are pretty key to ask but before really delving into the finer details. I was sort of seeking a general rule of thumb type of answer on how the connections are logged between two devices.
Regardless here are some of the details you have requested:
Firmware revision is 6.2.0.5 (not the latest version).
The distance between the two buildings is roughly 150-200 meters, connected via underground multimode fiber. (I think it is OM3 but don't quote me on that)
The transceiver is the Dell branded Broadcom (not 100% as I did not order it or install it, basing this on its firmware of BCM84752).
This configuration has been in place for about 6 months and as of about 1 month ago we started seeing these disconnects as described in my initial question.
To clarify my question: Between the two switches, if there is a disconnection should it not log this on both devices or is logging it at one end of the connection normal behavior?

Sorry if this ends up being a double post, responded this morning and when checking it now, my post was not here.
Really quick information here as I don't know if it is relevant to my question but just to pass the info along:
Firmware is 6.2.0.5, not the latest but I cannot possible see how it could be part of the issue as this is a new problem and the setup was fine for months.
Distance is about 100-150 meters connected via MM fiber (I think its OM3 but not 100%)
The transceivers are the Dell branded Broadcom, I had more details earlier but in a hurry at the moment. Will provide exact details if we take it further
Okay to clarify my question: Between two dell switches when a connection between them fails is it normal that it is recorded on only 1 of the devices or should it list the failed connection on both units (the latter being what I would expect)?
My thought on this is that if the device is not recording the failed connection and should be that my troubleshooting has become substantially easier to find.
Thanks in advance.

It should show up on both ends if they are both registering the failure. Is it the same switch that shows the failure in the logs each time, or does it happen on each switch? Updating the firmware may help, if you have other transceivers to test, that may also be a good step.

Hi Temprobkharper,
Curious to know, if your issue was solved. As am facing the same kind of issue, the SFP suddenly stops working. sometimes after a week, sometimes after a month.
Thank you
Anish
