Network card not visible in OS

I'm trying to install a Dell BCM5720 Dual Port in a Dell PowerEdge R730XD

The card is detected in the BIOS and also in iDRAC as BRCM GbE 2P 5720-t Adapter

Instead, when I boot to linux or windows  I can only see the integrated network card

Even if I try to execute the command hwinfo --netcard there is no Broadcom card.

I tried also to update drivers and firmware via LifeCycle Controller, Dell repository manager, direct via linux and direct via Windows, but I was only been able to install the driver Broadcom NetXtreme 21.4.2 in Windows server 2019 and the card still remains undetected.

If I try to install other drivers/firmware I get the message 'The update package is not compatible with your system configuration'

OS: Windows Server 2019
BIOS: 2.17.0
Firmware: 2.84.84.84

@Dell -Charles R Followed all the steps and now both network cards are visible on the os.

On idrac I can see their MAC address and firmware version. I updated the firmware and all went good

Thank you Dell for the support

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.

Dell BCM5720 Dual Port-> Which slot is this for?

I’m just wondering if you have only 1 CPU now- because it has to have both CPUs in order to use all the slots.

Respectfully,

@DELL-Young E The card is in slot 4. The server has 2 cpus E5-2640 v4. One single slot of 16gb ram

Hello,

please what you see in the device manager in Windows 2019?

Is the BCM5720 is seen ? Maybe it is disabled?

Can you try to boot the server in a minimum to post configuration?

Thanks

@DELL-Marco B It's a full lenght card. In which slot should I put it if I'm using only one CPU?

I configured the system  in a minimum to post configuration + ssd and network card.

The card is still not dected in the os and in the device manager there is only the integrated network card. In idrac it's visible.

I moved the card from slot 4 to slot 5

Hello Matteo,

According to the link YoungAh posted; Have you tried

Slot 8 - 1 Gb NICs (full height)

@Dell -Charles R I think you mistaken the PCI slot and card priority

Hello Matteo,

Yes it looks like I did mistake that. I apologize.

It should be:

1 Gb NICs (full height) - slots:4, 6, 5

1 Gb NICs (low profile) - slots:2, 3, 1

Have you tried any other adapter card in the slot to test the slot?

If you can post a picture of the label(s) on the NIC showing the Dell Part Number I can see if it is validated for the R730XD.

Hello can we see the PPID (part #)? You can upload an image here or you can click my profile and send me the system's service tag through a direct//private message.

Hello,

I confirm that part 0FCGN is validated for PowerEdge R730XD.

On test to see if it is an hardware issue is to test another card. Did you bought this card recently?

@DELL-Marco B Yes I just bought it. How cloud it be an HW error if it's detected in idrac, bios and the connection link is on on both card and switch? Why do I get the error 'The update package is not compatible with your system configuration' when I'm trying to install the correct driver?

Hello Matteo,

Can you let us know what the iDRAC shows for firmware version on the BCM5720?

I also notice you posted this:

The card is in slot 4. The server has 2 cpus E5-2640 v4. One single slot of 16gb ram

There is a minimum one memory module per processor

@Dell -Charles R Hi, the server is now in minimum config to post so only one CPU and one RAM.  The network card is in slot 5.
As you can see in the screenshot, there is no firmware and no mac address on the network card

Checked logs and Lifecycle logs, but there is no error.

You said that you tried with Windows but also with a linux OS right? So for me we need to investigate at the hardware level even though it has been recognized in BIOS.

Also that there is no mac address it is suspecting hardware error.

@DELL-Marco B Yes, I tried on Windows Server 2019 and SUSE15. I think that there isn't a mac address because there is no firmware installed

No, there is a firmware installed because it is recognized but probably it is corrupted.

If you tried already to update again via linux the .bin of the firmware I don't see any other way to fix that.

Fresh new RedHat 8.8 Installation.

I have tried to install all of this drivers:

Everytime I get the error: 'The update package is not compatible with your system configuration' on each driver

Reinstalled RedHat 8.4 and retried to install drivers, but without any success.

I managed to install this but nothing changed. Tried also to reinstall it with command 'rpm -ivvh' and there is no error.

Network card is still not detected in OS and the MAC address and Firmware not visible on idrac

Again, there is something wrong at the hardware level of the card.

Thanks

Swapped with another Dell BCM5720 Dual Port and got the same problem.

Tried all PCI Slots (4,5,6) but it was never detected on the OS.

Tried also to install latest drivers 226.1.107.0 but nothing changed. Installed latest firmware 22.61.8 and got the error 'The update package is not compatible with your system configuration'

Can you check the Dell part number on the card? I can verify the compatibility.

Thanks

Both cards have PPID KCC-REM-BCM-95720A2003G configured on slot 5 and slot 6

Also if I try to install the firmware 22.61.8 by extracting it and executing WinFWUpg.exe I get this error:

Ok the Dell Part number is 0FGCN.

The fact that NIC are well recognized in the BIOS but not in the OS is very unusual.

Also if in IDRAC it seen without mac address that exclude a software issue.

Did you tried those cards in another server?

Are the NICs bought with a Dell order? They are still in warranty?

Thanks
