PC 2616 help

My current setup is a netgear rt314 dsl router with a linksys EG-0008W 8 port gigabit switch. When I put the Power Connect 2616 in place of the linksys switch, I cannot access the internet or ping the router.  I am using the DHCP on the router. The computer ips are 192.254.177.xx rather than 192.168.0.xx like before. Once I put the linksys switch back, everything works fine. What is the problem?

Are the IP addresses on your clients in the 169.254.x.x range? If so, then the clients are not receiving responses from the DHCP server and Windows is assigning an IP address via APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing).

The first step to take would be to verify connectivity between the clients on the switch. Configure static IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x range and simply try pinging between the clients. If the clients can ping each other, the problem is most likely a connectivity problem between the switch and the router.

If the link does not appear to be established between the router and the switch, I would suggest trying to use a crossover cable instead of straight-through. Some of these cable/dsl routers do not seem to work well with the auto MDI/MDIX function of these switches.

The clients on the PowerConnect using static ips can ping fine.

I have tried straight and crossover cable between the router and PowerConnect with same results. Both lights are on (amber on top and green on bottom) but no communication.

If I place another 10/100 switch or the Linksys Gigabit switch between the router and the PowerConnect, everything works. There seems to be a compatibility problem as you stated in your last sentence. If there is no solution, I would like to return this defective switch.

Funny, I have the same problem and same setup. RT314 and 2616. Not sure if it's Dell or Netgear problem.

I ended up buying a new router since nobody wanted to take responsibility for it.

wecoyote25 - what router did you end up getting?

I'm thinking of using the Powerconnect 2608 + a Dell Truemobile 2350 Wireless Broadband Router (4 port wired + wireless).

I have a 2508 8-Port GB switch. It has been running fine, so I installed the PC-2616, as soon as I do, I lost almost half the connectivity to my network. I can not ping the router/gateway at all - I unplug it, put the 2508 back in, everything works fine. None of these switch lines support jumbo frames, so I already have that off and AUTO Neg enabled. Turning off Flow and QOS should not be an option, it works fine with 2508. A heavy performance loss would result. So what's the scoop? These switches just arrived this week, I purchased two of them. At this point, I am going to send them back and get another brand. I still haven't tried the other one yet, thinking that this one could of been defective, but I doubt it. Just severe compatibility issues with various GB hardware it seems.

Anyone else having these same issues?
