Power Connect 5324 Slow Response

Hi all.  I have 2 switched Dell powerconnect 5324.  The switches run fine but when i try to connect via web access it does not respond.  When i ping the switch it does not respond.  I can telnet into the switch and it works but runs really slow.  When i use the console it is fine.  I have about 10 users on each switch and they are working fine.  Has their been any management issues with the powerconnect range.  I  have a 5212 that does the same too

Any ideas

I have not noticed any symptoms like this in my network.  Perhaps it is specific to your setup if you have similar issue with 5212?  On the other hand it maybe just a matter of perception :-).  When you say slow - how slow is it?  Maybe I'm more tolerant to it then you are :-).  Also can you explain how you setup your switch - are you using SSH or just telnet?  Are you running HTTPS or HTTP?  What browser are you using?  What's the FW version on your switches?

Hello mate thanks for the reply.  Using  telnet not ssh and just http.  Switches are setup with an ip address, gateway and login details for the switch.  When i telnet into the switch its takes about 2 minutes for it to connect, then form their out if i type anything it takes about 3 minutes to appear on screen.  Using the console cable is fine.  So not to sure.  it is linked to a hp switch but i have on set that is dell to dell switch for stacking.

Hmm...strange.  Is ping to the switch management interface also slow?  You might need to figure out how to isolate different segment of your network to see where the slow down is.  Like perhaps ping to the first segment then ping to the second and see if you can identify where the slow down appears.

if i plug direct into the  dell switch, i can get onto the network no bother.  Does it need to be a cross over cable between them.  Sure the dell switch has auto sencing

i can ping to the hp switch no bother and everything before that but when trying to ping the dells i get no response.

So its the segment from the HP to the Dell switch.  Can you plug a PC/laptop directly into the 5324 switch and check to see if your speed improves when you are directly connected?  This way we can determine if the problem is just between the two switches or if it is a problem with the user interface itself.

I don't think its cabling issues otherwise you wouldn't get any link at all.  If its just between the switches then can you check on your HP and Dell switches to see what the port is configured to be?  What is the speed and duplex setup between the switches on the port you use for management traffic.  Otherwise you might need to debug the configuration on the HP as well as the PowerConnect to see which end is having problems.  You might want to look at the statistics on those ports to see if you are seeing errors on the ports.

We are seeing much of the same problems in a mixed-hardware network (Two Dell PC5324's, three 3Com 24-port switches, and one 24-port HP-switch). We had to disable Spanning Tree on the Dell's to even get a stabile network running, but now, after STP-deactivation on the two Dell's, the web-interface AND the telnet is hideously slow. We're seeing something in the order of two minutes to open the main page on the switches.

Has also tried opening a Hyperterminal-session by cable between a computer and the switch, but it's still slow.

The network physically set up with the three 3Com's running in a stack with the HP connected to one of them. There is fibre-cabling running from the 3Com-stack and over to one of the 5324's, and the last 5324 is cabled with normal cabling.

Any hints/tips?

Same here. The network is seemingly running just fine, but managing the switches is hideously slow. I've narrowed it down to happening just after we disabled the STP on the two Dell-switches.

Without the STP disabled, the ping-times to the switches would alternate between counting down from 200ms and 1ms (200ms on one ping, 1ms on the next, then 199 and 1, 198 and one etc) on both the Dell's. Network-traffic through them would also come to a abrupt stop.

i am still in the same situation mate, not had a chance to look at it.  The networks seasm to run fine its just managing the switches is the problem.  My enviroment it dell and nortell with a few hp switches, not getting any probs on the console thou with the dells jsut the nortell stuff
