Powerconnect 2016 passing modem IPs through

I have a speedstream 5200 DSL modem that is handing out IP addresses directly to each computer on the network. Between the modem and the computers is a Dell Powerconnect 2016. Consequently, I can only get three computers to hook up to the internet since my ISP only allows three leases. I am also having problems with packet loss on the network and have to force an IP on other computers.

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I can't find a seperate WAN port on this router to plug the modem into. Maybe it doesn't have one, should that matter?

Is this a problem with the router or the modem not picking up the hardware address of the router?

Looking at the documentation, the Speedstream 5200 does not appear to have any router functions. It looks like it is simply a DSL modem. The PowerConnect 2016 is simply a Layer 2 switch. It has no routing or NAT (Network Address Translation) functions. The 2016 is not capable of creating a private network and hiding your private network from you ISP.

To share your internet connection, you would need a cable/DSL router. The 2016 would then be uplinked to the router and would provide more connections than the typical 4-port or 8-port switch built into the router.

That was indeed the problem. I hooked up a 4 port router between the modem and the switch and voila, everything works great now. Thanks for the help.
