PowerConnect 3424

Can the Copper GbE ports G3 and G4 be used as standard ports or are they only used when stacking. I want to use one of those ports as an uplink to another Gig switch. The docs are kind of ambiguous on the subject. ;-)

thanks

Yes you can use those ports as normal gig ports.  If you use those ports then you won't be able to stack anymore but if you didn't need stacking then that's not an issue.

When I plug into any of the 3424's 10/100 ports, I can ping the switch. I cannot ping the switch plugged into either of the G3 or G4 ports. Is there some kind of config that needs to happen?

Scenario: Connecting The new PowerConnect 3424 to my existing 2124.

PowerConnect 2124:
Plugged into either the Gig port or one of the 10/100 ports

PowerConnect 3424:
Plugged into a 10/100 port - I get ping activity

Plugged into either G3 or G4 - I get no ping activity.

Is your switch in stacking mode?  If it is you can't use those ports.  Look at the front of the switch and check to see if the MASTER LED or any of the stack unit LEDs are on.  If so then you are in stacking mode and the ports will not work for normal operation.

As long as the switch is in normal non-stack mode the port should be usuable (unless you configured VLAN or something on them that block their use).
