PowerConnect 5012 Managment VLAN

Question

Hi,

Can I configure at which VLAN the PowerConnect 5012
(firmware 6.1.2.3291) will listen to it's IP-address?
My wish is to make it listen only at our network's
management VLAN.

The management IP address of the first-generation PowerConnect switches (3024/3048/5012) is bound to VLAN 1. The management VLAN cannot be modified.

Thank you for your answer. However, I have a new problem. The switch seems to reboot about once an hour. This occurs also when there is very little traffic on the network. Thank you, Olle2k

I have heard that the vlan management was tied to vlan1 before. But when i setup all the ports to only have access to vlan 2(except for 2 gig ports which are trunked and carry vlan1 info) i can still access the management through all of the ports that are only setup to access vlan2.

This is actually a feature that was added with the 6.x firmware. Since the management VLAN could not be changed, this feature allows anyone directly connected to the switch to manage it regardless of the VLAN. As this created a security concern, the IP Filtering feature was added to limit the ability to manage the switch based on a list of IP addresses (I believe the maximum number of addresses in the filter list is 16).

Okay, thank you very much for your answers!

However, after running a couple of days while rebooting
every hour, things has gotten worse. Now it doesn't
boot up completely, it reboots during the bootup.

Is there anything at all I can do about this?

Thanks for the reply. Thats actually what we ended up doing. We have the access list restricted to 2-3 ips. So an end user would have to guess one of those ips and crack the password to gain access to the switch.

Olle2k, that doesnt look like your switch is doing very well. I have never seen that boot message before.

The only thing i can think of is to maybe try reloading the firmware. You can do this by pressing escape at the correct moment while its booting. You can specify a TFTP server to grab a boot image from. Hopefully that helps.

I am going from memory here but if i remember correctly you can push the escape key at 2 different points during the boot up. At one point it will let you modify the boot up option(this lets you select a TFTP server to boot from ) and the second time give you some sort of shell access that i would assume is for debugging/password recovery. You obviously want to try the first option.

i am new to the dell powerconnect 5012  gigabit switch and am only using it to server as a lan partie switch so that all ppl on the switch can transfer files much quickly with no hangups and the lowest available latence in game on a network server that will also be connected to the internet. I guess you figured out im a gamer and need some info to help set it up for lan parties.   Heres what I have:Dell PowerConnect 5012,64 bit PC athalon 3700, msi k8n neo2 platinumAud,2 gigs of 3200 400 ddr plus too much more to list lol   Heres my problems/questions..   1) I have the console conected and yet cant reach the switch is there a basic program/shareware available to help me to do this.   2)I have a dsl modem connected to a linksys wireless router conected directly to switch. I can go stright to the modem with ip as well as router with the other but in no way am i able to connect to the 5012.
