PowerConnect 5324 Speed issues

I'm having some problems with the speed of the 5324.

I replaced an old 100mbit 3com hub with the PC5324 in our test room, but now network speeds have dropped significantly.
With the old hub I was able to pull a ghost image from a server with 600-700mb/min but now I'm only getting 300-400mb min. Same goes for pushing an image to the server.
I configured the port to the server fixed at 1gbit (speed 1000/duplex full) and the client systems fixed at 100mbit (speed 100/duplex full). Other then that the switch config is empty.

What can I do to speed things up???

 Cheers, Michiel

I almost forgot: There are also no errors on the port statistics.

Can you tell me what NICs you are using on your sever/PC?  Also do you have Jumbo frame enabled?

Thanks,

Cuong.

Hi Cuong,

The servers are Dell PowerVault systems with onboard Broadcom 57xx NICS, the clients are GX270/GX280/GX620 systems with Intel Pro 1000M onboard Nics(GX270) or Broadcom 57xx onboard NICs (GX280/GX620). Jumbo frames are disabled, because I can choose jumbo frames on the server side, but the clients are booted with WinPE or old DOS CD's. I can't enable jumbo frames on those so I left it disabled.
Client ports are also fixed at 100mbit/full duplex.

Cheers, Michiel

Michiel,

Is it possible to post the config for the 5324?  Or email it to me directly if you like.  We would like to take a look at it to see if we can figure out anything from it.  It will also help us to try to reproduce the problem.

Thanks,

Cuong.

Michiel,

Can you take a look at the port configuration on the 5324 connecting to those servers and clients and see if the ports on the switch are configure for auto-negotiate or fix speed?  If you setup the servers and clients NICs to be fixed then you should also setup the switch port to also be fixed.  If you leave the switch port configuration to the default auto-negotiate and the other side doesn't auto-negotiate then the switch will actually drop down to the lowest speed which may be the problem.

Another thing you can try is to setup servers and clients to auto-negotiate.  Then on the switch ports that are connecting to non-gigabit servers or clients just make sure you disable advertising for gigabit so that the switch port will only offer 100Mb.  On the switch ports connecting to gigabit servers/clients you can leave the default advertisement.

We have seen some problems with NICs driver code that incorrectly negotiate the speed when offered gigabit speed where they support only up to 100Mb.

Let me know if any of this help.

Cuong.
