S4048-ON - No console and stuck in boot-loop

I have a S4048-ON that will not boot up, we cannot even get a console to come up.

It appears to be looking for files from the blinking light on the front and then reboots.

This was part of our core switches and the OS or Firmware was updated almost a year ago and on reboot it is now stuck in this boot-loop.

I've tried multiple serial connectors as well as the micro USB connection and they all see the device, but I get no console.

They replaced the core switches with more updated options and I'm now in control of this device for learning purposes, if I can fix it. I have read through endless amounts of documentation, but I don't see any way of resurrecting this device, it all requires console.

I don't believe the device is a brick yet. What options are there to get a new firmware and OS installed?

Hello,

Here are a few suggestions that you can try. Can you check the type of cable you're using here https://dell.to/2ZO6g39

There was a method that worked for older FWs. Can you try to Putty with recommended Console settings (serial port settings are 115200, 8 data bits, and no parity) open the connection, and reboot switch configuring, or just power up again?

Please review pg 43 https://dell.to/3aTkQga

If you're still unable to console into the switch I suspect to switch might was brick. I hope you have the backup config. If you have still warranty I can recommend might be good for to you can reach the local call support for quick dispatch replacement.

Let us know how it goes!

Confirmed I am using the serial cable the switch came with.

What I can see is that the middle green light on the front blinks over and over and then it reboots and according to the documentation this means it is looking for the firmware to boot, but it isn't finding it and reboots.

I've tried putting an image on a pen drive and plugging it in, but it doesn't seem to boot off it.

Is there a specific way to image the .iso file for the switch to recognize it or is there some other way of getting a new firmware onto the system without console?

Hi,

Unfortunately, there isn’t you would need at least some console to get to ONIE menu to do a rescue. Is the switch under warranty?

No warranty and has already been replaced in the core setup.

I was simply trying to bring life back into this for my own learning purposes.

Oh ok, yeah it seems like it is a failure that isn’t recoverable.

Hello,

The best recommendation I could make would be to contact our spare parts group. I show the phone number to be 800-357-3355. They should be able to identify a motherboard based off the service tag of your switch. I don't have any information regarding present part availability, unfortunately. I suspect that if you want to obtain a replacement board from Dell, contacting that group would be the best step to take.

It looks like the main board on the inside can easily be replaced, but I come up short when looking for parts for this switch.

Is there any way of getting a replacement main board for one of these.

I'm specifically talking about the "motherboard" where the memory, processor, and Msata go. I have a feeling that's all that this needs since it appears the BIOS is bricked.
