Setup Dell Powerconnect 6224 U691D expansion module

Hello everyone,

Could I please get some guidance on how to setup this expansion module?

We've installed it and rebooted the powerconnect.

We connected a 4*10G breakout cable to it. Here is the model: https://www.fs.com/products/36768.html?attribute=1356&id=147042

Here are some diagnostics!

show fiber-ports optical-transceiver
show interfaces status

We noticed the interface is down, and LOS = Yes.

Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you for your help!

Hi Patrick,

a passive twinax cable should not give any light power levels and these values look more generic than real.

Could be the cable is meming an optic and the switch is not able to drive it correctly.

You may check if the interfaces xg1/xg2 are configured in ethernet mode instead of stacking:

show stack-port

If you see something like this re-configure xg1+xg2 for ethernet operation as outlined in CLI guide:

If the links are still not coming up please provide some details of the link partner.

Regards,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the helpful reply!

We were hoping to rule out other possibilities as well, in order to save time since we are unable to get access to the switch often.

Do you think this gives any indication that the module is damaged? We bought it via Amazon renewed, and we can purchase a replacement right away if needed.

Also, the link partner is a Netberg Aurora 710 switch.

Thank you for your help Tim!

Best,

Patrick

Thanks for getting back to me!

Regarding the stack-port, it seems all interfaces were already configured as ethernet to begin with. The link is still down. Do you have any recommended steps to try and bring it up?

Also, here is our OS version if that is helpful:

Thank you for your help!

Hello patkon,

Can you let us know the firmware version of the switch?

Are the ports shutdown?

Try the no shutdown. Example enables ethernet port 1/g5.

console(config)#interface ethernet 1/g5

console(config-if-1/g5)# no shutdown

Hello, the link I gave yesterday seems completely wrong (now updated).  I apologize.
I'd say not to use stacking but to use frontline links to see if the breakout cable works.
For more information Dell does not have a certified breakout cable.

Hello Dell -Charles R and DELL-Young E,

No worries, thanks for getting back to me. Can we double check the command we have to run to get the firmware version?

Also, we did run the command "no shutdown" before, but the link is still down.

Also, I want to point out that the U691D module LEDs have no light at all.

What do you mean by "using the frontline links to check if the breakout cables work"? My understanding is that the front panel ports do not have SFP+ ports, which is why we purchased the module?

Thank you!

Hi at this point it is highly recommended that you open an official ticket with tech support because that way they collect the logs from you on putty session and also can focus on destination port(40G port )

#show version
#show system
#show boot-version
#show logging

#show interfaces advertise
#show interfaces configuration
#show interfaces description
#show interfaces detail
show interfaces status

These are the information we need from you to assist you better.

Hello, yes please.

For now I can see your firmware is outdated.

https://dell.to/3tTOpHm
3.3.18.1 is the latest firmware for this switch model.
