Hi,

What is the other transceiver connected to? What does it show for the port status? The ports should work at 1G. If you use the speed command to set the interface to 1000 does it work?

Thanks for the quick response!  It's good to know that it should work.

For now I'm plugging into a 10Gtek gigabit fiber to rj45 adapter (because it's small and portable!), so the chain is:

10Gtek adapter --> 10Gbase-SR SFP+ --> Fiber patch cable --> 10Gbase-SR SFP+ --> S4810

I've also tested with Trendnet gigabit adapters and a Dlink switch with a 1 gigabit SFP port, all using the same 10Gbase-SR SFP+.  None of those devices will show a connection with the S4810, though any combination of them will work with each other.

Per your suggestion, I've tried setting the port speed to 1000 on the S4810 but still with no success connecting.

I've also tried other ports.  Here is the current port config:

Dell(conf-if-te-0/1)#show config
!
interface TenGigabitEthernet 0/1
description testport
no ip address
portmode hybrid
speed 1000
no shutdown

Any suggestions on how to get gigabit working?  Thanks!

 line protocol is down

It doesn’t seem like it properly connecting as an SR connection.

July 24th, 2018 18:00

Got it.  Do you have any recommendations for how to deal with that?

July 25th, 2018 09:00

But the 10Gtek adapter, the Trendnet adapter, and the Dlink switch all work with each other using the SR SFPs and properly negotiate down gigabit.

The same SR SFPs also negotiate properly to 10gbe on the S4810.  The S4810 just doesn't recognize the gigabit connections from any other device.

Do you have any suggestions or configuration changes you would recommend for getting the 10gbe ports to negotiate down to gigabit?

Thanks!

I probably would start with the 10Gtek adapter. It might not handle SR properly, some only to LC or SC fiber.

Also, just for kicks, I tried plugging in two ports on the S4810 to each other.  When speed is set to auto on both, they properly negotiate a 10Gbe connection.  When I set the speed to 1000 on one of the ports, they no longer connect.  When I set the speed to 1000 on both ports, they do connect.

Is there an issue with this switch being able to automatically negotiate to gigabit?  Do you have any ideas of how to get the original issue to work correctly?

Thanks!

Page 414. 10G doesn’t support auto negotiation , so if one port is 10G and one is 1G it won’t switch speeds. So sounds like manually setting both sides is required.

Thanks, that works when I'm hooking up two ports using a single cable on the S4810 as a test, but doesn't help in that I can't connect to other devices (10Gtek, Trendnet, Dlink, etc.) using gigabit.  What we have learned in this test is that these SFPs do work with 1Gbe and 10Gbe on the S4810.

Do you have any specific recommendations on how to get the S4810 to connect to OTHER gigabit devices?  I still can't get a connection to anything else.

What is the reason you are needing to connect directly between the switch and 1G devices? Putting a switch in between that has 10G uplinks and 1G ports would probably be the easiest method.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Since I have only a handful of gigabit devices, I didn't want to buy a new switch just to get them to work.  It was also my understanding that this switch should be able to do both 10Gbe and 1Gbe.  If there is a way to get this to work, I'd love to know.  Do you have any recommendations to get these devices to talk to each other?
