Can't find my printer

Just got my inspiron 6400 and I'm connecting to the internet wirelessly using a router. My desktop which isn't a dell is plugged in to the router and has an epson printer connected to it but I can't pick up the printer on the inspiron. I've selected share on the printer and even tried turning the firewalls off but I can't pick up the printer at all.

Any help is appreciated
Thanks
Andy

make sure your connected to your own network. i usually make the network ID name your first name. also make suure your connected to your network wirelessly higher than 48mbps. sometimes this number drops lower. 48 and 54 mbps is where it will see the printer and folders from other computer. good luck

ok go to the desktop and find the printer icon in control panel. highlight the name of the printer. right click it and choose sharing on it. then  find the ip address to the desktop. once u have the ip address of the desktop go to the laptop and do the following.

start then run type in

should look like this

\\192.168.1.1

then hit the enter key. your printer icon and folders should show up
double click printer icon and install printer drivers on the laptop

goodluck

I'd like to try this too.  How do I find my desktop IP address?  I have a netgear router.  I can share the printers though it?  I thought you had to have a print server.  When I selected sharing for my printer I got a diaglog box about security.  I have the highest level WEP, etc. set up on the router and Inspirion 6000.  What do I need to understand about security?  Is the desktop secure through the router?  I have....Cable Modem to Alpha Shield hardward firewall to Netgear Router.

On Steve's 1st reply he says do the following      start then run type in -then a blank area-  should look like this \\address I presume.  Was there suppose to be anything in the blank area?  I should just type in my desktop IP address after the \\?

My printers are already installed on the laptop.   So do I need to do the start, run //  part?  Can I have more than 1 printer shared?

Thank you,

Christine

u can share more than 1 printer and on several computers. when i say click start button the run button. type in the run area \\192.168.1.1

there is no space before those \\.     also make sure that the slashes are going in the direction im showing. use back slashes and not front slashes.

Now to find your desktops ip address. go into control panel then network connections. then choose lan. look for a checkmark for when connected. Let it put a monitor on the clock area (bottom right of the screen) once u see your connection double click and choose support. it will then show u your ip address to your desktop. then take that # and go to your laptop.

start then run type in \\xxx.xxx.x.x      where the xxxxx are u put in the address u got from the desktop with the printer u want to share. good luck
