Connection problems after using sleep mode

Question

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721, and until recently successfully connected to the internet in the UK via a netgear wireless router.  I recently changed my ISP to BT, and continued via the Netgear router.  However a recent storm knocked out the router, and so I have installed the BT Home Hub that was provided with my new ISP package.    My desktop PC's work fine, but my 1721 fails to connect to the internet after being in sleep mode, and invariably I have to restart it and then reset the Home Hub.  I have tried to investigate the problem on the web, and have come across suggestions that it could be a WPA/WEP related, although I don't fully understand these issues!  Obviously it is inceribly frustrating and time consuming.   Is this a common problem, and does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can overcome it?   Many thanks in advance for assistance.
