Internet connection through Router

I have a Dim 8300 XP Home ed. with a Linksys wireless 801.11b Router, which I have used for years with Cable.  I just switched to DSL with Verizon.  The connection to the internet works well when connected directly to the computer.  I reconfigured the Router and wound up with an "INTERNET GATEWAY" heading in the Internet Connection Dialog box.  It contains a file "Internet connection": Type:  Internet Gateway; Status:  Disabled;  Device Type:  Internet Connection.

Below this is the heading "Lan & High-speed internet" under which is "Local Area Connection" and is listed as connected and is referenced to the correct Intel internet device installed on my computer.

I don't know how this "INTERNET GATEWAY" heading was created, but I think this is what is preventing  me from connecting to the internet through the Router.  I seem to remember having this happen when I originally set up the Router with Cable, which created the same problem.  I think I got help on this board with instructions on how to remove this heading, but I don't remember what they were.  Looking for a solution to this problem.  Thanks.

I don't believe this INTERNET GATEWAY heading was in my prior settings when it worked in cable.  And, it is listed as disabled.  There doesn't seem to be any to enable it.  I seem to remember that this was part of the ICS software for connecting without a Router.  But my memory may be faulty.

I don't see any reference to entering my user name and password in the Router configuring.  The password is satisfied by entering "admin" in the connect to 192.168.1.1 Dialog box.  And I have entered a name in the SSID Dialog box.  And I configured the Primary DNS and secondary DNS settings in the IP settings along with the IP settings.

If all else fails, I will run the Internet Wizard and be sure to not use ICS, if that is the correct name for the connecting software.

I think the internet gateway device (your router) usually shows up if the device support UPNP.  I'm not aware that it's a problem.  Did you correctly enter your DSL account information (username and password) into the router's WAN configuration page?  If so, did you remove such authentication software from your computer?

you DSL service likely uses PPPoE -- when you select this option in your router's config you should have a place to enter authentication information.

Well, the problem is solved.  I first had to clone the WAN MAC address that Verizon uses into my router.  I then had to change the settings in the modem to "Bridge" through the Mfg. website.  They reset the modem.  I then reset the router using the CD reset, which resulted in the router automatically resetting the IP and MAC address from the modem.  Everything is working normal now through the router.  Without the proper IP and MAC addresses in the router, it was never going to work.  Thanks for your help.
