Microsoft VPN

My question regards setting up VPN with Windows 2000. When I go to add a network component, I don't have to option to add VPN. If you could help me out, i would greatly appreciate it.

thanks,
Matt

Although I don't know what you mean by "network component", this is the suggested method.
Right click "My Network Places". Then double click New Connection and the wizard should start. You should see the option for the VPN there. Hope I could help you out.

My Network Places-> view Properties, select Create New Connection
then select "Setup an Advanced Connection" -> "Accept Incoming Connections" ->

On Devices for Incoming connections dialog box, don't select any device, just click Next and check "Allow Private Connections" then just click Next.
Select or Add all users that you want to have access to the VPN Host. User must be on both the Host and Remote for VPN connection.

On New Connection Wizard you should have; "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks", "File and Printer Sharing", "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and "Client for Microsoft Networks" as listed network components.

Allow callers to access LAN and assign TCP/IP automatically using DCHP. If that's ok, click Next and the Incoming Connection icon should show on the Incoming section under Properties of My Network Places and your VPN Host is ready to roll.

Don't forget you must have the remote setup as a VPN client with either direct modem or a dedicated connection to the internet. Computer Name needs to be set up on the remote using Propereties of My Network Places-> Create New Connection-> Connect To the Network st my Workplace->VPN then type in the computer used for the VPN connection, select Do Not Dial the initial connection. The Host should have a static IP or if the IP is dynamic must have a recognizable internet domain. You'll have the option to select the option for anyone or just yourself. Con't forget you must have a username and password to start the session and it must be listed on the VPN Host.
