"Network Controller" driver missing for Latitude C610

Reinstalled Win2000 in Latitude C610 (4 years old) after hard drive replacement.  Orig. Dell driver disk has been lost.  Downloaded all drivers that seemed applicable from the Dell site by specifying the service tag of the computer.  Installed chipset update first, then video, audio, network.  I still have an entry under "other devices" in Device Manager for "Network Controller" with a question mark and yellow exclamation point next to it.  I've examined the original equipment list and do not see any network devices on it, although there is obviously a ethernet and modem connector on the side of the computer, and it worked fine before the hard drive crash.  According to the Device Manager, I have a 3com 3c920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller, which is listed under Network Adapters, so I went ahead and updated that driver.

My question is how can I find out what "Network Controller" it is finding that it cannot find a driver for?  As I said, the "Dell System Summary" for this machine doesn't give any information.  I attempted to install a DLINK Airplus G wireless cardbus adapter that was previously working in this computer, but it no longer detects the card, so I am thinking this must have something to do with the "Network Controller" thing.

Network Controller usually means "wireless card". Install the WiFi card drivers.

Thanks. That was my understanding as well, but this latitude does not have internal wireless and I have not yet installed an external card. I confirmed this by looking at the "original configuration" and "current configuration" on the Dell support page. The only strange thing I found was a PCTEL 56k modem is listed on orig. config but no modem is listed on current config. (nor is there a modem in device manager) The modem connection is obviously still there right next to the ethernet connector. The network adapter works fine.

I successfully installed the external DLINK Airplus G wireless cardbus adapter, once I had the correct version of the drivers.  The "Network Controller", however, still comes up in the Device Configuration as needing drivers.  The computer works fine and I guess I am just going to ignore the "Network Controller" issue.

I see this all the time at work. Almost every PC I work on (90% Dell) have this error in device manager but it doesn't affect anything.

I am having the same problem.  It will not let me online.  I was able to connect by just plugging into my desktop router.  Now it says that it is connected but I get can not display screen.  So I still have the yellow question mark.  Can anyone help me fix this so I can go online.  Thank You
