no dial tone 4500s

no dial tone.Did it all, checked phone line , correctly plugged in. Queried modem (ok)went through whole diagnostics, reinstalled drivers, made sure phone line itself had dial tone ok...called Dell, waited 30 minutes.."Sebastian" tried to lead me through all the steps I had taken, did it ..still no dial tone. Set computer to original config (F2 etc..)..still no dial tone.. Sebastian says it is the modem. I don't believe it. Any ideas?

Modems have a jack for the Telco Line and another one for an analog (voice) telephone.  Make sure you have the telco line plugged into the one for the Telco line.  Plug a telephone into the "telephone" jack and see if you have dial tone there.  If you do, that would indicate the telco line is good and it's getting to the modem, and if that's the case modem probably is bad.

On the other hand, if you don't get dial tone on the volice phone (and you do where the modem RJ-11 t wire cable) is plugged into the wall telco jack then either RJ-11 interconnect cable is bad or the modem input is bad (if the input connection is bad then the modem will still have to be replaced).

Thanks for replying. My computer has two jacks in the back as you say. One has a little telephone besides it and the other has no nomenclature whatsoever. The telephone line has always been plugged into the one with the little telephone logo and it worked at one time, so I have to assume that is the correct connection (the inst. manual shows neither connection). I get a dial tone when I plug a telephone in either one.
So I hate to buy a modem only to find out that is not the problem. It queried ok..

The jack with the telephone Icon is for the voice phone.  The other jack is for the line.  On some modem cards it doesn't make a difference as they are in parallel, on other cards it does make a difference.  Plug the telephone line into the correct jack (not the telephone jack) and see what happens.

thanks for your continued interest. It does not work in either jack. I have tried everything suggested by various fora , but I somewhow suspect that if I buy another modem , it will still not work...
