I have an Inspiron 6000, Windows XP (SP2), Intel PRO Wireless/2200BG Network Card Netgear WGR614 v6 router. Everything was working fine for over a year until Monday, June 11. The laptop indicates that there is a good wireless connection, but when trying to access a webpage it takes forever and then comes back with a message saying that I do not have an internet connection. I turned off the laptop, unplugged the router, and then rebooted the modem (Comcast). Once the modem was back up completely, I plugged in the router. Once the router showed it was receiving a signal, I turned on the laptop. I was able to access the internet for about a half hour and then lost the internet connection again. Meanwhile my desktop computer is working just fine which is directly connected through the router. I am also able to connect to the internet directly to the laptop through the router.
I have updated all drivers and firmware. The TCP/IP is set to automatically obtain addresses. The router is set to NOT require a MAC address match. I tried having the PRO Wireless configure and also Windows. Below find the results of the ipconfig entries. Hopefully someone will see something that I can fix. Thanks.
With Pro Wireless configuring card:
C:\Documents and Settings\Brenda Voght>ipconfig /release
Windows IP Configuration
No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected.
Here is what I have determined as of this moment. I did a system restore and my network came back and wireless connection was working fine (06/11/07). Once I was back home and tried to logon through my wireless connection on 06/12/07 my network was gone once again. The message I have is that there are no wirelss networks available or in range, and that is hard to believe when I am sitting right next to it
So I did another system restore and its back again (06/14/07).
After I completed the system restore my networks were back once again and I was connected. I then noticed an update going through on my Windows XP (automatic update). I cancelled this because I believe that the update was the problem. I will try it out again tonight and see if it all still works. If so then this must be the problem. I will let you all know what I discover.
Does anyone out there know if this is where the problem is coming from?
Unfortunately, System Restore did not work in my case. I restored to Sunday when it was working and still the same problem.
Also, there was a question posted by a Dell Laison earlier but it was deleted. To answer the question, I downloaded the latest driver from the Dell site for the wireless card and version 9.0.4.33 is what is being used.
Well, I just verified that my laptop wireless network card works outside of my house. I am typing this using a free WiFi access. So I do wonder if it is my router or modem. I guess I go get a new router to start with and go from there.
That was why I had you reset the router and modem in the other post. I would start with the modem if they will replace it for free. If that don't fix it then the router. But you may have changed your network router setting because you said you reset the modem a few times. You could remove the current network setup by resetting the router and make a new one. Might fix the problem. But once you reset the router it defaults back to factory and you have to set it up again.
I actually did reset the router today and then reran the setup wizard. Comcast said that it might be the splitter, so I am going to replace that first. If that doesn't work then see if they will replace the modem. I don't know if they will do that since I have internet access working on my desktop. Thanks for all your help.
If you start and run the cmd on the desktop and type in ipconfig does it show host as comcast and what ip address does it show? Yes, very well may be the router. Have you tried any other laptop for wireless in your house?
Okay, so I decided to see what I got for an IP address when just going through the modem. Of course, I reset the modem before starting up my desktop. I do see the hsd1.wa.comcast.net for the DNS suffix. When I set everything back up with the router in place. I do not get that. So is it something wwith setting the DNS? Below are the ipconfig /all results:
Well, you need the router connected and have access with it connected then do the ipconfig. I am not sure why the host now says Brenda. I am going to send you a message in this forum and here is how I have my linksys router setup. But this is set as a secured connection and not sure if you are using one. Just get the modem and router connected and make sure you have internet access with the destop. Then we can move to the router setup. Now if you view all wireless networks from windows and you see several then you need to move your connect to the top of the list. Get the router back connected and the desktop with access with the router connected. I will use Mike? where you need to enter your information.
