My computer was running extremely slow, so I recently reformatted my hard drive and re-installed windows XP on my Dell Inspiron 9200 Notebook. Now, I am no longer able to connect to the internet. I connect directly to my school's LAN with a network cable from the wall. My network adapter, the '1394 Net Adapter' says 'Connected - 400mbps' whether the cable is plugged into the computer or not, and I am not able to go anywhere online. When I look at the list at My Computer>Hardware>Device Manager, it shows 'Ethernet Controller' with a question mark next to it. It says there is no driver installed for it. I have a feeling that this is my problem, yet I've spent several hours looking online for an 'ethernet controller driver' with no luck. Any ideas?
In Device Manager, under Network Adapters, my '1394 Net Adapter' appears as well as my Wireless Network Card. Under 'Unkown Devices' is where 'Ethernet Controller' shows up.
In the Network Connections window, my Wireless Network card appears, and is disabled. The '1394 Net Adapter' appears also, however it says 'Connected - 400mbps' whether the cable is plugged in, connected to the wall, or not. Packets sent/recieved is 0/0.
Under the driver details for the '1394 Net Adapter', the date on it is from 2001. Is it possible that some missing updates could be causing the problem?
I noticed the link provided is for Europe. If you don't live in Europe the be sure to go to
support.dell.com click on drivers and downloads and put in your service tag and it will pull up the correct drivers.
Problem solved. I tried several drivers out of the 'Networking' section, unsure of which card I had. I overlooked the driver I needed amongst all of the wireless drivers. Thanks for the info.
