Router setup

I have limited knowledge of the WRT350N.  But I'm currently running two routers in series.  The first is a Linksys RT31P2, a Vonage router and the second is a Linksys WRT54G.  The RT31P2 is connected to a Motorola 5100 cable modem and the WRT54G is connected to one of the LAN ports on the RT31P2.

 

When you configure the WRT54G, give it a static WAN IP address in the range of the 350N, but not within it's DHCP range.  Subnet Mask should match the 350N and you should enter your ISP's DNS addresses.  If you have the 350N using it's default LAN IP of 192.168.1.1 and it's DHCP range as 192.168.1.100-150, then give the WRT54G an address outside the 100-150 range.

 

The LAN IP address of the WRT54G should be changed so it does not conflict with the 350N IP range.  Change the third octet of the LAN IP of the 54G to something other than 1, such as 192.168.2.1.  All the IP addresses assigned by the 54G will then be 192.168.2.x.

 

It's helpful to configure the WRT54G standalone, before it is connected to the 350N. 

 

You are effectively creating two independent networks.  However, PCs connected to the WRT54G will be able to access PCs connected to the 350N because they are behind the 350N's firewall.  But PCs connected to the 350N will not be able to access any device connected to the 54G, because the 54G's firewall will block them.

 

In my case, the WRT54G is my personal network.  The RT31P2 manages my Vonage phone and is used to connect client PCs.  The firewall in the WRT54G blocks any client traffic attempting to access my personal network.

I have a WRT54G and a WRT54GC at home and they are behind a BEFSX41 router/firewall.  It's been a while since I set them up but if I remember correctly there are two possible ways to do it.  You can leave the WRT54G as a router and have a seperate network on a different subnet or you can configure the WRT54G as an access point and it does nothing more than supply a wireless connection.  The first thing is to change the IP address on the WRT54G if it conflicts with the default on the WRT350N.  What static IP you use would be based on your choice above.  Assuming you chose to make the WRT54G an access point, you need to disable DHCP and turn off the router functions.  I don't remember the exact tabs and setting but I will try to check tonight and let you know.

I'm unfamiliar with Open-WRT but have some familiarity with DD-WRT.  DD-WRT's initial setup screen was quite close to the standard Linksys setup screen.  And I'm 500 miles away from my WRT54G for a week.

 

Since you have designated the WAN IP as static you need to fill in a non-DHCP address and subnet mask the 350N will recognize.  The Default Gateway address should be the LAN IP address of the 350N, presumably 192.168.1.1.  WAN DNS servers should be whatever your ISP's DNS server addresses are. 

 

For the LAN configuration, the IP address looks fine.  I'm uncertain if the Default Gateway should be the static WAN IP address of the WRT54G or 192.168.1.1.  LAN DNS servers should be whatever your ISP's DNS server addresses are.
