Two network cards causing lots of problems (unreliable connection)
My equipment & how it is setup:
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 running Windows 2000 server with the built in Broadcom NIC & have recently installed a second NIC (D-Link DFE-530TX). I bought the second NIC so I could share my broadband internet connection with my Apple Mac. I connect the D-Link directly to my cable modem (a Nortel) & the Broadcom into a 3Comm ethernet hub that I have (Linkbuilder FMS II), the Apple Mac is also connected to the hub.
Some issues that I encounter:
1. I cannot connect to the internet unless ICS is turned on the D-Link.
2. After a couple of minuetes I am no longer able to click on the NIC icons in the bottom right corner to bring up the properties.
3. When I click on 'My Network Places' icon the whole window is blank.
4. I still have internet connection when these things occur and I can still browse & download mail on the Mac, but limited browsing on the Dell (cannot click on many links).
5. When I double click on the control panel or select from start menu all of the icons are squashed in the left hand panel of the window.
6. I cannot pick up any icons & drag to another location.
7. When browsing web on Dell I get an array of error messages (runtime errors, do u want to debug).
8. When I restart the machine is OK for a few mins then it starts again.
Some other points:
? I have no other services installed on W2K server just standard install (no DHCP , DNS or Active Directory)
? The hub worked fine with my other Mac as I used to have 2 Macs sharing this cable connection.
? It is not the D-Link network card as I had a Netcomm card that I just returned because I thought it was faulty.
? My cable connection has always worked with machines with no issues.
? I have reformatted the Dell thinking that I had a virus (I even used the Dell deug command).
? I have no extra sofware on my machine as I thought this could cause issues, so I never reinstalled after format.
? I need to run W2K Server as I am currently studying to become a MCSE.
? I have tried to disable & swap NIC did not work.
? No firewalls or proxy.
? I have just upgraded BIOS to Version 3 & have service pack 4 for W2K Server.
? All my drivers are current.
Please help as no one is able to assist me (I keep getting passed around from one support rep to another)

The NIC being used for ICS should be set to a static IP address and have the other machine point to that address as the default gateway. It has been so ong since I've even fooled with ICS but it is bascially the same thing as a server with two NICS. The one connected to the modem would be set to obtain an address automatically (providing your ISP has set you up that way) and the other NIC now becomes your gateway.
Think of the 2nd NIC as a router, but without the firewall protection and DHCP capability.
