WiFi problems with 8910 XPS Desktop

Hello All,

I am hoping this forum will have some advice for troubleshooting the M2 Wifi card in the Dell XPS8910.  It sporadically drops out and then comes back.  At times it requires a restart to restore wireless connectivity.

First off I am pleased with this computer with the exception of the networking problem that I have sporadically.  I have contacted Dell support and they uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and made some modifications to the wireless settings.  The settings actually made things worse so I restored the wireless settings to default and we are back to the beginning.  Next Dell support asked me to create a second profile and log into it for the day.  Done and no change.  They then suggested resetting the computer and I drew the line at that.  That is why I am reaching out to the forum to see if you have any suggestions before I wipe my drives clean and start over.

Additionally I felt it might be the router so I replaced it.  Current Router is a WRT1900AC.  Other computers and devices do not have the same problem.  I have confirmed that my router is using channels that are different then the neighbors.

The computer runs hard wired without any problems however due to the structure of the home I can not get a permanent hard wire to the computer.

Suggestions?  Should I replace the Card and see if that fixes it?  Suggested Card?

Machine is still at factory Specs.

Hi cshoneyman,

Thanks for posting. One thing I don't see that you've tried would be the location of the computer in the home.  Is it possible that the signal from the router could be blocked by walls, desks, etc?  Have you tried changing the position of the computer?  How about the antenna?  Is it securely connected to the board?  These are some things you may be interested in trying.  Information on the card and the antenna can be found in the manual: http://dell.to/2nUTejR

Two things that have worked:

1. Make sure there is no other wireless equipment around. I had a case where a wireless phone in the same room as the computer AND the modem and could get no connection with the two about three feet apart.

2. Try changing the DNS server addresses. This has worked for three or four computers, and it has worked for others. Search the web for the procedure. I have used the free DNS server addresses 208.67.222.222 primary and 208.67.220.220 secondary.

In addition, if you have a wireless card that has "N" connections, if possible, disable the "N" function fo the card in the Device Manager. I have seen that newer "N" cards do not have a disable option.
