Wireless Network Connection Problems

My wife and I have identical Dell Latitude D610 laptops except she has an intell Proset wireless card or connection. My wireless connection says Dell Wireless WLAN card.

She is able to connect to a local wireless network but I cannot  (even if we are at the same location a the same time). I am not familiar with notebook technology and do not want to break anything but would it be easy enough to purchase a proset wirless card (or even swap them out ) so I can see if that is my problem in regard to connecting to this network? I tried buying an external wireless card but that did not seem to help. Maybe I did not get a good quality card (it was a basic card with USB connection.)  Or is there a way to boost my reception of this network.

What is the best card to get so I might be able to connect to the same wireless network? Any help is appreciated.

I don't know the wireless cards you have in the D610s. It is possible that one card handles 802.11a/b/g while the other one handle only b. If the wireless cards came in the machines from Dell, then you should be able to use the service tags on the bottom of the machines to see what the original cards were ... if still on warranty then Dell support should be able to help ... at least tell you what the cards support.

Another possibility is to find a techie friend or otherwise that can figure out exactly what wireless cards you are using and what type of networks they support.

From what you say, I gather that you are not a techie and do not work inside your machine. The miniPCI cards are simple enough but the ulta small connectors for the antenna wires require some skill.

You could go with a PCMCIA card but from what I read, they do not work as well.

    Good Luck.
