Hi, I have a question about wireless networking in my dorm room for college.. Currently my room mate and I both have laptops that have wireless cards in them but the dorm is not wireless.. So we plug in from our network adapter with ethernet cable to the ports on the wall.. We would like to buy a wireless router so we could lay in bed and be online with out wires.. but the question i really have is how would we set that up.. could we just run from the plug an ethernet cable to the wireless router.??? but how would we configure it b.c. we would not want one laptop to have to be hooked up to the router....(not have the laptop free of wires)???? can you help?
Follow this guide unless you want the whole dorm in your wireless netwrok. What you will be doing is actually subnetting the school's LAN, which they may have a rule against so check that out first.
No.. we would just like to use the wireless network for our dorm room not the whole building.. so we would create a password to get online.. so after we set up the router we could just unhook it from the one machine and hook it up by itself???
Did you read the article? It clearly states how to stop anyone but authenticated users from accessing the service. First of all, disable the SSID broadcast, secondly use WPA encryption, and thirdly, well....I'll let you read the article the find the real gem.

You will need to hookup one of the machines wired to make the setups and then you can disconnect.
