I'm ordering a new Dell computer and laptop and I'd like to know what the use of a wireless router is? I know it has something to do with sharing internet access and what-not but how would I know how to connect it after I've bought it? Can anyone give me some insight to wireless routers and which one I should get?
A wireless router is a device that connects to your broadband modem (either cable or dsl) and then shares that connection (if you want to think of it that way) with other computers on your home network. Typically a wireless router will allow up to four computers to connect via an ethernet cable (the wired approach), though it's easy to expand this to allow for more. Many more home computers can connect wirelessly if they have a wireless card.
For most home users, to make use of a wireless router you'll need a high speed internet connection and a broadband modem that supports an ethernet connection (some are usb only).
basically like i said, you plug your broadband modem into the router and then either plug your computers directly into the router or connect to it via wireless.
This kind of relates to a question that I have. I just bought a new laptop and a wirless router. I connected and setup the wireless router to my dsl modem. However, when I try to connect to the internet from my laptop wirlessly, it is always unable to connect. It works fine when I switch the ethernet cable from my desktop computer to my laptop, but I want to be able to have a wirless connection from my laptop. Am I missing something that I need to purchase? I'm so confused. Sorry to interfere on this message, thanks to anyone who has any idea what to do.
