CPU options for 5060SFF

Back again with some questions on my precious little workhorse here. 

Looking into CPU upgrade options has proven to be confusing. The Dell website lists the max supported CPU for the system as an i7 8700 (I currently have an i5-8500). I was looking to upgrade to the best listed option, the i7-8700, I got down a rabbithole for what my actual upgrade options are.

Now, from what I've read the mobo is an LGA1151 300 series - meaning it supports 8th and 9th gen CPUs... but nothing  lower. I've also read that the i7  9700 and the i9 9900  are compatible. On intel's website they're listed as being compatible with Q370.

However you know what isn't on Intel's website? The i5-8500! They do not list the i5-8500 as being compatible with Q370 on their site at the time of this writing, which if I understand correctly, is just plain wrong.

The reason I bring this up  is to show my confusion with the reliability of these sources for compatibility of CPUs for my system. I've seen multiple posts claiming you can slot in a 9900K into this series mobo just fine... but also multiple posts  saying you'd need to fiddle with the BIOS and CPU microcode which is a dangerous thing. But at the same time, the 9900(K) and 9700(K) are both Q370 and LGA1151 compatible. Dell's website doesn't list them as such, but then Intel's own website isn't a reliable source of compatibility either, so it casts doubt on Dell for me.

Can someone please help me with this? Has anyone successfully slotted in a 9th gen CPU into this mobo without fiddling around with the BIOS or CPU microcode? I want to make sure I can get the best CPU for the system, and not something that I'll have to return after dropping 150$ on it. Thank you.
