Optiplex 3040 SFF, CPU, GPU, HDD upgrades
I am going to get a Dell Optiplex 3040 in a couple of weeks so does anyone know if I can upgrade the Intel core i3 6100 from the Dell OptiPlex 3040 to an Intel core i5 6600K, an Intel core i5 6700 or an Intel core i3 8350K? Can I also Upgrade the Hard Drive to 2 Samsung HD502HJ 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM SATA's or 1 Samsung HD103SI F3 1TB 3.5" 7200rpm SATA? Am I also able to put an AMD Radeon R7 240 2GB GPU into it and can I put these into the PC without needing to buy a better power supply?

Ok if you stay within Intel 6th gen cpu class, so yes for 6600k and 6700. Unfortunately you cannot upgrade to 8th gen. Motherboard chipset does not support 8th gen. So no for 8350K.
HDD upgrade depends on 3040 form factor. Tower can accommodate two 3.5” hdd (one of them needs to be in external 3.5” bay), SFF only one 3.5” due to physical space restraints.
gpu upgrade depends on your 3040 form factor which dictates stock psu power rating. 3040 tower psu is 240 w. 3040 sff psu is 180w. You can upgrade sff psu or tower psu too with some limitations.https://www.levnapc.cz/ProductsFiles/dell-optiplex-3040-technicka-speficikace.pdf
3040 sff can only fit low profile gpu.
3040 Micro does not support discrete gpu.

Can someone send me a link to a cheap 500W power supply off amazon that I can put into my Dell Optiplex 3040 that I am going to get in a couple of weeks?
Here are the specifications for the Dell Optiplex 3040:
Intel Core i3 6100 (I'm going to upgrade it to a Intel Core i5 6600K)
8GB DDR3 RAM
Integrated Graphics (I'm going to upgrade it to a AMD Radeon R7 240 2GB)
500GB HDD (I'm going to upgrade it to a 1TB HDD)

This page at Hardware Corner has good information on a PSU update for the 3040. One word of advice. If there is one component in a PC you should not try to go cheap on, it is the PSU. A cheap PSU can be the cause of many problems down the road. A quality PSU is not much more than a budget PSU and will last for years. In addition, if you install a cheap PSU and it should take out the MB or other components then Dell will not cover the repairs under warranty.
One more thing, the PSU in the 3040 (you did not mention which form factor) is more than enough power for that GPU.

For the spec you mentioned, you don’t need 500w psu. basic psu calculator estimates Load Wattage: 226 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 276 W
Dell oem 240w psu for 3040 tower meets load wattage. R7 240 is a low power 30w card which doesn’t need a 6 pin PCIe connector.
