Optiplex 3040m processor upgrade options
Hi, I recently bought a 3040m and put another 8gb of ram in it and its working really well. It lags a bit doing heavier work as expected but I was wondering if I may be able to upgrade the processor and what it could potentially take if possible.
This is what is in there currently :
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6500T CPU @ 2.50GHz, 2496 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i7-6700 will work (as will other 6th generation i7 CPUs).

Nice one mate. Is it just a case of swopping them over or will I need to change anything else?

You'll need to clean the old thermal pad/heatsink compound from the heatsink and apply a new layer of paste or a pad to it. Other than that, it should be relatively straightforward.
Be very careful in removing the original CPU -- if it's been in the system undisturbed for the number of years this system is old, it may be very firmly adhered to the heatsink. You may want to remove the CPU/heatsink with the system warmed up. There's a competition between Intel and AMD as to who can design the flimsiest CPU contacts -- the AMDs use pins that are easily bent, while the Intel ones use a landing pad (land grid array) that is similarly flimsy. Do not force anything as you can easily destroy the socket on the mainboard of an Intel LGA CPU pad.

unfortunately it is not practical to upgrade cpu in a micro to standard desktop cpu for tower and SFF. the micro has a wimpy cpu cooler designed for 35w TDP cpu such as i5-6500T. the i7-6700 is a 65w TDP cpu. while the micro can run with this cpu, expect cpu temp to be on high side and cpu cooler fan to be noisy at rpm more often than you like to hear.
micro chassis is very small with poor air flow and no intake fan.
only an fan shroud and a single fan for the cpu cooler
Dell has only validated low power cpu for the micro for this particular reason

Good point, but there is also an i7-6700T as noted.
