OptiPlex 5050 SFF Front Chassis Fan
Hi guys,
I notice there is a front fan mount on the chassis, is it a 60mm system fan that it takes? There doesn't appear to be a another fan header on the board so how would you go about powering it?

I think I read in this forum that the chassis fan header was removed on some newer Optiplex's.
One way to use an aftermarket fan is get one with a molex (4-pin) connector. Get a SATA power splitter. Then one connection can go back to DVD drive and in the other plug in a SATA power to molex adapter to plug the fan into.
I haven't seen any fans yet that can just simply plug into SATA power. They're either molex or are meant to *plug into MB.* *Some require an adapter.
As for fan size, it looks like you may have measured already? Fans sizes typically round to the nearest zero, whether it be 60mm, 80mm, etc. I'm sure there are a few sizes in between, like 92mm for one.

I think you're spot on, although my board has sys_fan and SD_reader test points, there are no pin headers... That's fine.

You're welcome!! : ) You might even light it up with an l.e.d. fan. I also have blue l.e.d. fans in my 7010 MT.

@slipd For anyone else going through the same issue; I’ve had the same problem with the sff 5050. In order to add an extra case fan, the only option would be to use the SATA power connector. I’ve spent hours trying to look for an alternative and i managed to find of Amazon “ 15 Pin SATA 3 x 3 Pin / 4 Pin “
This worked for me. Btw, the biggest fan fitting the case would be a 80mm. Thanks for starting this discussion! Cheers!

I know its a old thread but those who have found a solution please let me know which fan and power option you went with and did it work fine?
I did see there is a 3 pin port for intrusion detection. Will the fan work with that?
I really want to find something as the NVME SSD I have in there with my OS is getting superheated inside. Its running around 76C.

@saro78 exactly, i have just installed nvme and it's literally frying without fan, I have have ordered 4 pin pwm extension, which is what we connect to CPU fan $pin and extension gives us 4 new 4pins to add. plus while browsing I also found owner manual in which there is 4 pin for SYS_FAN just beside nvme, not sure if all models have or not.
Edit:- Yeah just opened up and they have removed 4 pjn, there is just header for it :(

So is it confirmed that 80mm is the biggest fan that can fit in the front panel of the Optiplex 5050 SFF? I don't have issues using a SATA power connector to power the fan as that is pretty basic.
